The Auckland representatives to the Racing Conference next month will move that a reduction be made in the amount of stakes required for totalisator permits. The Hon. Mr. Ormond will move as an amendment, with a view to reduce the number of race meetings and gambling " Whereas the working of the rule providing that the use of the totalisator should be regulated _ by the stakes provided has not materially reduced the number of race meetings, whilst it has in some cases operated possibly on old established genuine sportIng race club, it is now resolved (I) that it is necessary to reduce the number of race meetings at which the totalisator shall be used (2) that the use of the totalisator shall only be granted for race meetings in each Metropolitan district. That the Metropolitan Clubs shall be entitled to use the totalisator for the same number of days in each yesr as during the past year: that the country race meetings at which the use of the totalisator shall be granted shall be allotted in July in each year by the racing conference composed of representative of the Metropolitan and country clubs; that in such alloting the Conference shall divide each Metropolitan district into sub-districts, regulating such division by the distance from the metropolitan centre, and exoept in certain exceptional cases of important clubs, not more than one permit for the use of the totalisator shall be granted to any one sub-diutriot." When the Bill introduced into Parliament to abolish the totalisator comes up for discussion, Mr. Ormond will move similar amendments in the House.
