AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Auckland City Council was held yesterday, when there were pro—The Mayor (Mr. Crowther), Messrs. Garratt, Warren, Trenwith, Farrell, Clover, Julian, Kidd, Holland, Dignan, Swales, Wright, Courtney, Powley, Hewson, Paterson, Luks, and Grey. Burgess Roll. —A letter was received from the Colonial Secretary stating that in compliance with request an order had been made extending tho time for the preparation of the burgess roll of the city. Qdken-street. — Messrs. McArthur and Co. regretted that the Council had dismissed the matter of the sewer under their warehouse in such a cavalier fashion. The matter was one that required early attention. In answer to a question, it was stated that the sewer could not bo made to join that of Queen-street as it was 15 feet lower. Tho engineer stated that Messrs. McArthur'e premises were similarly placed to others in the street. It was decided to reply in tho terms of the engineer's report. Signboard.—Messrs. L. 1). Nathan and Co. requested permission to erect a handsome advertising showboard in front of Messrs. Glanvillo and Ellyett's shop, in Queen-street. It would only bo shown for three weeks, and the picture was such an attraction that the writers were convinced its exhibition would be well justified. The matter was sent to the Streets Committee. Meat INSPECTION.—Mr. J. Currie, Newton Borough Town Clerk, wrote in reference to a conference to discuss the best means of having expert inspection of meat. The Newton Council, he said, would be willing to cooperate with the City Council. Albert Pakk.— Mr. SV. E. Bruce wrote renewing his application, that the Council would pay half the coat (£l2) of the reerection of a fence between the Albert Park and the property of Dr. J. H. Honeyman. Mr. Bruce gave several- reasons for the roquest. The Engineer reported that the owner had originally put up the fence at his own expense, preferring to do this than that the City Council should continue the high fence they had erected at the back and along a part of the side, as the high fence would have blocked the window lights. He thought Mr. Bruce had bettor let well alone. It was decided to adhere to the original decision, uot to bear any of the cost. SENTINEL Road.— Mr. John Thompson, of St. Mary's Road, wrote, stating that he was about to build on an allotment in Sentinal Road, Ponsonby. This allotment received all the drainage from a considerable number of places in Hamilton and Jervois Roads. Ho requested a visit of the Mayor and ward members to devise some method of drainage. The engineer reported that the place mentioned was a natural watercourse ; the drainage would be a heavy job when undertaken. The matter was referred to the ward members. St. Mary's Road.— Mr. R. J. Payne, of Ponsonby, asked the Council to reconsider the matter of concreting the channels, and thereby doing away with the nuisance coinpained of in St. Mary's Road. The engineer reported that tho cost of concreting would be £IG. Mr. Swales said the work was urgent; certainly the place was in a filthy state. The matter was sent to the Streets Committee. Right-of-way. — Mr. R. Duffy, of Hob-son-street, applied for consent to register a deed showing four feet of laud facing a right-of-way, which had been in his possession for the last 25 years. The application was referred to the Legal Committee to report. Streets Committee. — This committee reported as follows : —Petition from residents of Summer-street, re tarring and sanding : Your committee recommends that the work be placed on the list for next season. Petition from ratepayers of Costleystreet, re condition : Your committee recommends that necessary repairs to the channelling be done. Letter from I). T. Parker, re 'bus time-table, etc. (Mr. Parker, Mr. Kidd, Tramway Company, and Inspector Goldic in attendance) : Your committee recommends that Mr. Parker be informed that unless he keeps his time-table his license will be cancelled, and that the attention of the police be called to the racing of omnibus drivers at night and on Sundays. With reference to the stand in Lower Queen-street, it is recommended that as soon as the legal stand is confirmed the application be considered. Motion of Mr. Wright re works Ponsonby Ward (deferred for committee's report) : Your committee regrets that so much unauthorised work has boon proceeded with in this ward. Motion of Mr. Hewson re tarring and sanding Grafton and Park Roads : Your committee recommends that work be placed on list for next season. Letter from Bishop Luck re drainage Newstreet (Dublin to Green-street) : Your committee recommends that work be done at Engineer's estimate if Bishop Luck will pay half the cost, estimated at £47. The report was adopted, it being stated that the Mayor had given authority for necessary work at Ponsonby. Legal Committee.—This committee reported as follows : —Letter from Mrs. Buicher (Now Zealand Art Designing Society) re use of room in Art Gallery Building. Your Committee recommends that Mrs. Burcher make application to Art Society, and that Council raise no objection to Art Society allowing use of their room. Letter from A. Boardman re Art Gallery. Your Committee recommends that reply be forwarded, "The subject matter is being considered." Motion of the Mayor re Licensed Carts By-law. Your Committee recommends by-law, as drafted, for approval. Memofromlibrarian re order for books No. 7, 550 vols., value £216; Your committee has instructed that order be sent by outgoing mail. Memo from town dork (new), re contract for supply of periodicals: Your committee recommends that tenders be called for one or three years, as before. Letter from G. Strong, baths-keeper, requesting reconsideration of dismissal (petition from bathers advocating reinstatement, read) : Your committee recommends that Mr. Strong's conduct on this occasion be overlooked, and ho be reinstated, with a warning that any future offence will insure his discharge. Memo from librarian, reporting 318 vols., order No. 6, to hand, was read. —The report was adopted.

Finance Committee. — This committee reported as follows : —Letter from watchman (A. Tilly), re salary : Your committee has no recommendation to make. Letters from leaseholders, section 31, Grey-street; L. H. Neumegen, lots Li and 13a, Cookstreet; W. H. Skinner, lots 14 and 14a, Cook-street; George Dunnet, lot 24, Albertstreet, requesting continuation of reduction of rentals : Your committee recommend that same reduction as last year's be allowed for ono year. Memo, from treasurer (new), re payment of salaries : Your committee recommends the adoption of recommendation to pay salaries on the 3rd of each month, being passed at the preceding Finance Committee meeting. The report was adopted.

Street Names. —Mr. Warren moved, "That tho names of streets within the City of Auckland be written on the glass of each lamp where fixed in prominent places." The motion was defeated.

Grken-stkkkt. — Mr. Swales moved, " That the engineer be instructed to have the channel on the south side of Greenstreet laid with concrete, to carry oil the drainage." Mr. Wright seconded. The matter, however, was referred to the Streets Committee on the motion of Mr. Julian, seconded by Mr. Farrell. In putting tho motion, the Mayor was proceeding to say that when Mr. Swales could not get his own way he was always a. little indignant, when Air. Wright rose to a point of order ; the mover of the amendment had replied, and the Mayor had no more privilege to speak than any other member of tho Council.

Stand for four licensed hackney carriages : Queen-street, on tho east side. 3. Stand for three licensed borough stayo carriages : Queen-street, on the east side. 4. Stand for two licensed borough stage carriages : The junction of tho College Road, Ponsonby Road, Jervois Road, and St. Mary's Road. 5. Stand for licensed express carts : Quay-street East, on the south side. 0. Stand for six licensed hackney carnages : Quay-street East, in the centro of the street.
