(White) - Betting : 3 to 1 on Camoola, 5 to 1 t. The Admiral, Id to 1 each v. Portsea and Culloden. The moment the word was given Portsea took upon himself the task of pacemaking, and led past the stand by four lengths, followed by Culloden, who was six lengths in front of the Admiral, who had a two lengths' advantage of Camook and Donation. Clearing right away. Portsea established a lead of 30 lengths at the back of the course from Culloden, who was cantering a length in front of The Admiral and Camoola, while Donation was waiting patiently in the rear. With White leaning over his neck and patting him, and encouraging him with his voice, Culloden began to draw upon the lender, on whom Hayes had taken a slight pull. When passing the stand for the second time Portsea s lead was reduced to four lengths by Culloden, while The Admiral and Camoola were eight lengths away, and wo lengths clear from Donation. Gaining upon the leader it every stride, Cullodon got on even terms when threequarters of a mile from home, and five lengths from them came The Admiral, a length from Camoola, who was the same distance in front of his stable companion. The pace then became very solid and. as Portsea began to tire, Cull "den, with The Admiral at his quarter, went up to him, and the trio raced locked level round the bond two lengths clear from Mr. Clark's pair. Portsea held out signals of distress at the turn, and The Admiral, shooting Up on the inside, just led Culloden Into the straight, with Camoola on the left and coming very fast. But, fast as he came, The Admiral more than held his own, and when inside the distance it was seen that, although fairly extended, Camoola was not gaining, a great cry went up that the favourite was beaten. The whip fell with a sharp sting ; but although the -son of Chester responded, The Admiral drew away, and won a well-contested race by three lengths amid a scene of greU excitement and enthusiasm, Donation, who finished well, was only a neck away, wfj&le Portsea and Culloden were beaten off. Time, sm. 335.
