A DANGEROUS ROAD: A HORSE KILLED.
An accident occurred on tho Karekaro Road, near the Manukau Heads, which resulted in the loss to Mr. Cox, of Mount Albert, of a valuable horse. He and his friend were returning from Karekare Bay, on the West Coast Road, with his, horso laden with botanical specimens, ferns, etc., and poing up tho Karekare side cutting, the horse slipped over the side of the narrow path, and fell a distance of one hundred feet, and so injured his spine that he had to be shot. Every moans were used to get the poor beast up again on to the road without success. This road has been allowed by tho Waitomata County Council to become quite impassable. It is completely blocked by landslips. Complaints have been made by the settlers of tho dangerous stato of this road for over a year, and no later than last meeting the engineer reported on it and recommended that it bo attended to at once, but, nothing was done. Now the county will bo involved in an action for damages, which will cost more than would have cleared the road. It was very fortunate for Mr. Cox that he removed the bridle rein off his arm just before bho accident, or ho would have most certainly been dragged over with the horse and killed. There arc a great number of men engaged getting timber to the Huia mill, and their stores and implements have to be packed up this road from the Manukau Heads, and a fatal accident may occur any day.—[A Correspondent.] _____———
