COMMERCIAL.
New Zealand Herald Office, Thursday evening. The Customs duties to-day amounted to £982 Is 9d.
Business on the Stock exchange still maintains a very quiet tone, holders of stock appearing not to be inclined to sell at the prevailing quotations, whilst buyers do, not exhibit an inclination to give an advance upon the prices they have made up their minds to offer. There have been sales of Bank of New Zealand stock at 97s 6d during the week, but buyers only offer 975, and sellers now demand £5. Though there have been no transactions in New Zealand Insurance, there are plenty of shares in the market at 71s. There is a very good demand for South British Insurance, but shares are difficult to obtain at the price buyers are offering. Sales have taken place at 325. There have been sales of National Insurance at 16s 9d ex div., and buyers are now offering 16s 6d ex div. There Are buyers of Auckland Qas (new) at £5 6s, and sellers of old issue are asking £10 14s. Buyers of Union Oil are in the market at 13s 6d ex div. Mining business generally is dull and neglected, sales being difficult to effect at existing prices. Alburnias have advanced in price to-day in consequence of a quantity of picked stone being reported as having been obtained while sinking the winze. The demand for Hazelbanks has improved somewhat on the strength of good reports coming to hand from the mine. Some business has been transacted in Moanataiaris at about previous quotations. Ihere has been a steady inquiry for Crowns (Karan?ahake), and sales hare taken place at a considerable advance on our last quotations. Taken altogether, business on the Exchange may be summed up as being remarkably quiet. During the past week business in all departments has been rather dull. There has been little doing in the import Hue, and local trade is merely the daily supply style which has been customary for some time past, and which evieenoesan improved general inquiry. There appears to be no speculative feeling in any branch of trade at the present time, the depression prevailing in mining matters at the Thames probably contributing not a little to this state of things. In the produce line there is a brisk enquiry for maize, owing to a good inquiry for Sydney. This cereal is fast becoming an important factor in the general export trade, and helps to keep up the steamers' business by freight provision. We quote good export business at 2s 7Jd, f.0.b., with from 2s 6d to 2s 7d ex ship. Oats are still somewhat weak. We quote 2s 4d ex store. Owing to non-competition in coastal freights the belief is general that local prices will tend upwards. The abundance of green feed is however slacking the requirement. Potatoes, old, are still selling at 45s in unlimited lots to places that new are useless at owing to their non-keeping quality. The season is, however, virtually over, and the inquiry is mostly for new, which show a good market reduction during the week. We quote : New kidney potatoes at £510s, and Shepherd's at from 70s to 80s. Milling wheat, local and southern : Heavy arrivals into the Auckland mills. The unsatisfactory state of the English and American markets, coupled with favourable accounts of the growing wheat in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, have had the effect of intensifying the depression in all our grain markets. Prices therefore are still on the down grade. Fowl wheat : There : s not much selling. Bran and sharps : Although prices fell last week, the sales have not increased. Flour : Heavy arrivals have rather checked sales.
Id the local produce market butter is becoming very plentiful, and a reduction in price may be looked for. At present prices are as follow:-Best dairy butter is per lb ; second quality, 6d ; and third quality, 5d per lb wholesale. Errs have advanced to 7d per dozen wholesale and 9d per dozen retail. Mr. Thornes, land agent, 81, Queen-street, reports the sale of lot 45, of a subdivision of part of lot 22, of section 8, suburbs, frontage to Clarence-street of 40 feet, by 90 feet deep, with four-roomed cottage thereon, on behalf of Mr. W. Savory, to Mr. Clarke, for £150.
