TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

.! TO THE EDITOR. | Sir,— Monday, 31st October, a deputa* tion waited on the Hon. W. P. Reeves with a view of getting his opinion on this subject, and he told them to form an association. But what have Messrs. W. H. Skinner, E. Bartley, J. H. Mackie, R. Tudehope, and J. Fair weather done? Schools we have in abundance that would do for class-rooms, teachers of all sorts ready for work, and £800 on the estimates for 1893, to get a share of if we can organise an association. In Dunedin, on the 14th. October, the fourth session of the Technical Class Association was closed by a meeting in the City Council Chambers. It was opened on April 4, and carried on. with a fortnight's break in the middle, till October 7. The total number of students enrolled was 364. Ol these 320 took only a single class, 41 took two classes, while three took three. The following classes were opened English, English literature, Latin, French, mathematics, arithmetic, chemistry, engineering and applied mechanics, shorehand, wood-carving, cookery, and domestic economy. The last two were taught by ladies. The English class received 48 entries, shorthand 54, and arithmetic and book-keeping 68 ; and, of the 364 on the roll, 145 resided outside the city belt—that is, have to come a considerable distance. Of the 279 new students, 241 had passed the sixth Standard, 25 had passed the Fifth Standard, and only 1 13 were of Fourth Standard attainment. The chairman, Mr. Burt, said that it was intended next year to expend some money in getting appliances for the different classes—mechanics, type-writing, physics and chemistry. The drawing classes in connection with the Association were conducted by. Mr.'Rutton, and were well attended.— l am, etc.. An Old .Pupil of the " Watt Institution," • V " Edinburgh.
