THE CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB'S MEETING.

RESULT OF THE DERBY.

Ciiristoiiurch, Wednesday, The weather was fine and warm for th« second day's racing of the Canterbury Jockey Club. The attendance was again large, about 5000 being present. The Governor and Lady Glasgow arrived shortly after tho first race. Lady Glasgow decorated Stepniak, the winner of tho Derby, with a blue riband, amid hearty cheers. The race was a pretty one. Derrett, on tho winner, rode a grand race. St. Hippo, the favourite, was in front entering the straight, but failed to respond when called on, and suffered defeat by three-quarters of a length. Mr. Powell sent tho field away in an even line. In the Metropolitan Stakes, Cynisca came very fast in the straight, and won easily by two lengths. Black Hawk was the first over the hurdle in front of the stand, followed by' Justice and The Idler. Justice ran off at the hurdle near Cutts. Black Hawk went on well clear of the Idler and the Marquis of Tewkesbury. At the next hurdle Black Hawk refused. The Idler had ten lengths lead of the Marquis of Tewkesbury rounding the bend. The Idler was first into the straight, but the Marquis of Tewkesbury, answering game.'/ under the whip, won a splendid race by a neck from Tho Idler. Time, 3ra. 12 3-ss. Before the straight was reached Au Revoir made way for The Dancer who was first into the straight with Young Cheviot at his heels. Merganser and Heather Hell ahead of the others. The Dancer retired at the next furlong. Merganser catching Young Cheviot at the rails drew out and won by a length from Young Cheviot, Heather Bell a length- away third, Retina fourth, Boulanger fifth. Time, lm. 30s. Skirmisher was tirst away, followed by Westinere ami WaUawatea, but before the top turn was reached Westmere joined Skirmisher. The two ran together until the top of the straight was reached. Here Westmere stumbled and lost his position. Wakawatea was on even terms with Skirmisher half-way down tho straight. A little further on Wakawatea was beaten. Skirmisher held his position to the finish, and won comfortably by a length from Westmere, Ueraint two lengths away third, Wakawatea fourth. Time, lm. 3Js. Mr. Powell sent the field away to a beautiful start. Captive was the first to break the line, but at the half distance the order was, Tempest, Captive, and Liberator. Rounding the bend'Rosefeldt and Tempest were running neck and neck, while Cynisca and Crackshot improved their positions, but Tempest was beaten before the straight was retched, and Kosefeldt landed into the straight with a clear lead of everything elso. Cynisca. caught her, however, at the distance post, and striding on, won very easily by two lengths, Crac.kshot a length in front of Kosefeldt; Prime Warden fourth, Wyvern fifth, Strephon sixth, and Tempest last.
