A SERIOUS CHARGE.
ARREST OF AN AUCKLAND CHEMIST. Late yesterday afternoon, owing to information received by the Auckland police authorities from Napier, a warrant was issued for tho arrest of Wm. Powell, chemist, of this city. The warrant was executed by Detective Chrystal and Sergeant Bernard, ab Newton, and Powell was brought to the Auckland Police Station shortly before five o'clock. The charge preferred against him is that on or about the 19th October last, at Auckland, he did unlawfully and feloniously use a certain instrument with intent to procure miscarriage in the case of Fairley Jane Lucy Clarke. Ib is understood that the female referred to was a stewardess on one of the coasting steamers, but is now in the Napier Hospital under medical treatment, and is stated to be in a critical condition. Her statement has been taken. The accused will bo brought up at the Police Court this morning. At the time of tho arrest some cases of surgical instruments were taken possession of by the police.
