THE MELBOURNE CUP.

EVE OF THE GREAT RACE. |BY PHAETON.] The eventful day of another Melbourne Cup has come round, and at about four o'clock this afternoon on the banks of the Saltwater River, the final act for which horseowuers and trainera have been preparing for months "past will be brought off, and with its conclusion, the hopes and fears of many a weary backer will be set at rest. The opening day s racing showed that Camoola was equal to the task allotted him in the Derby ; but as lie had to be ridden out to win by three parts of a length from Meli, we are told that his Cup prospects were not enhanced by his display in the " blue riband." That the Cheater colt is a racehorse he has given abundant proof ; ana as the syndicate accorded him their undivided support for this race, as well as for the Derby, it may be inferred that he has satisfied his astute trainer of his staying ability. If Camoola wins he will nave achieved what no three-year-old has done since 1883. If the form displayed by Malvolio and Correzo in the Melbourne Stakes were to be accepted as true, they could salely be left out of calculations ; but form in these woight-for-age races prior to a big handicap has of late tended rather to mystify than assist backers in their endeavour to unearth winners. By all accounts Malvolio is a vastly-improved horse to what he was last year, and though his stable mate has also been consistently backed, the opinion at Caulfield is in favour of Malvolio proving the best of Mr. Redfearn's pair in to-day's race. Since The Admiral's satisfactory display in the Melbourne Stakes on Saturday he lias presented himself as a very likely winner, and great horse though Malvolio undoubtedly is, he has an extremely severe task before him to concede 71b to the son of Richmond. Uopetoun apparently made mincemeat of the crowd opposed to him in the Hotbam Handicap on Saturday last, and as the son of Proto-Martyr will have the services of one of the best horsemen in the land in E. Power, hia chance must be treated with great respect. Clonard is a horse that has been very steady in the betting ever since his third to Paris and Yarran in the Caulfield Cup, and though ho has yet to show staying anility, some good judges consider that the sixteen furlong trip will not be beyond his tether. All things considered to-day's race bears a very open aspect ; but the two for whom I have the most fancy are Malvolio and The Admiral, and to reduce the selection to one, my vote goes to The Admiral. I The following are the names of the thirty- ■ nine hones that figure in the Cup :—

The result of the Cup will be received in Auckland shortly after six o'clock, and immediately on receipt will be posted on the Herald bulletin board. TRAINING AND BETTING NOTES. Frets Ais&iation. —Electric Tele>i>avh.—Copyritjht. Melbourne, October 31. Tirailleur covered two miles yesterday morning in 3m. 455., taking even time over the last four furlongs, and this morning, accompanied by Titan, he executed a strong mile and a-half gallop. Maivolio and Correze swept along for a mile and three-quarters in company, registering nine furlongs in 2m. 3is. Malvolio moved along like a piece of machinery, but Correze did not please the touts. Yarran and The Admiral travelled at three-parts pace, the latter being evidently all the better for the race on .Saturday. Malvolio is hardening in the betting for the Cup, whilst Camoula is likely to recede slightly when hedging money comes in. A large number of visitors have arrived to be present at the Cup meeting, and there is the likelihood of a very large attendance. The weather is warm, with every promise of a fine summer's day to-morrow. The betting on the Cup is very"brisk, but the police are extremely vigilant against cash netting in shops. Malvolio has hardened to 100 to 15 for the Cup, and the other quotations are : 100 to 12 Olonard and Camoola, 100 to 10 The Admiral, 100 to 8 Portuea, 100 to 6 Eurus, Malolo, and Correze, 100 to 4 Titan and Swordbeaier. Sternchaser has been scratched for the Cup. • ' Later. With tho exoeption that Malvolio has advanced to 5 to 1 for the Cup, there has been no material alteration in the quotations to-night. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. [BV TELEGRAPH.—I'RI'.SS ASSOCIATION. I CintiSTCHURCH, Monday. At Riccarton, soon after fuur o'clock this morning, E. Cutts sent Awarua Rose and Retina a fast mile, they going in improved form. St. Hippo and Morion wore put together and taken along from the two-mile post till passing the stand by Quadrant, who then retired, and the pair continued on, St. Hippo leading Morion by a couple of lengths to the end of once round, when The Dancer joined in and came on with the three-year-old, Morion, who appeared to have a big weight up, being several lengths away. St. Hippo's time was fair. Cynisca went freer than Boulanger over once, round, which was registered as a fair pace, Strephon and Rosefeldt galloped the Cup distance, the latter having the worst of the weights and a little the worst of the run, which was accomplished in two seconds slower time than that occupied by St. Hippo. Flinders, alone, did useful work, while Captive and Launceston, with flying start, put in a fast mile, the former having the best of the weights and the most in hand at the finish. Crown Jewel galloped a mile alone, and came away in a second mile from Au Revoir, covering the last six furlongs well. VVakawatca did good work, but The Dreamer was only sent at naifpace. Wyvern travelled strongly over the last of two circuits of the course. Vogengang and Merrie England cantered a mile, and galloped a second one solidly. Crackshot, who is in good spirits, was given halfpace work. . Prime Warden on Saturday night lengthened to 6 to 1, and Launceston advanced to that quotation.
