WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
(BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Hamilton. Friday. At the Waikabo County Council to-day, there were present Messrs. Primrose (chairman), Barugh, Johnson, Forrest, and Paton. Only one tender for the office of engineer to the Council was received. Mr. E. Fairburn offered to do the work for one guinea a day for the actual time taken in travelling,, and with railway fares from Hamilton to the work, and the cost of labour employed on surveys. A letter was read from Mr. Gwynne stating that the Council had misinterpreted his terms, which were one guinea a day, travelling, but not hotel, expenses. The offer of Mr. Fairburn was accepted. Mrs. Smythe wrote asking for a road at Meremere. The Council agreed to do the work, provided Mrs. Sniythe paid half the cost. Mr. Douglas wrote stating that the bridge at Mangakawa broke down when he was crossing with a load of goods. The horses were saved, but some of the goods were damaged. On the recommendation of Mr. Johnson, it was resolved to allow Mr. Douglas to replace this bridge and another at a cost not exceeding £8. Leave was granted to Mr. Geraghty, of Rangiriri, to construct a tramway to allow them to get flax and coal to the mill. Damages were claimed for the loss of a cow, valued at £7, by falling into a natural pithole on the road by Mrs. Schlinker's. This letter was ordered to be received. Tenders for fascining the Matahura Swamp Road and building culverts were received as follow :— Richard Storey, £46; Arthur Neil, £39; Hurtman and Dethily, £32. Mr. Johnson said the prices were far too high, and none or them were accepted. It was resolved that the engineer should report on certain proposed works in the Matahura district and Taniwha Road.
