COLONIAL DEFENCE.
Preis Association—Electric Telegraph— London, October 2*7. Loed Onslow favours General Edwards' suggestion that a military Governor should be appointed to Tasmania, but fears that that colony will object to its Governor owing duties to other colonies. General Edwards agrees with the report of the New South Wales Defence Commission, that that colony only requires the nucleus of permanent artillery and submarine miners. He urges that if the report of the Commission is adopted the saving effected should be applied to improving the land forces. He considers local defence in Australia is not absolutely necessary, but it is essential that England should command the seas.
