KNIGHTS OF LABOUR AT ARATAPU.
I The Hope of the North Assembly of the Knights of Labour organisation held a social gathering in their meeting-room on Saturday evening last. There was a good attendance of members and friends, and a plentiful supply of tea, coffee, cakes, pastry, and sandwiches had been provided. These latter were first attended to, and then short speeches, appropriate songs, and a reading passed time profitably away till nearly midnight. The recent long days of over eleven hours' labour at the Kauri Company's mill, and the payment of overtime at the same rate as ordinary time, were referred to, and it was agreed that there was need of some such union of working men as the Knights of Labour afforded opportunity for. Nearly every person present contributed something towards the evening's programme, and the social proved a very pleasing union of old members, there being also a number of non-members present. The meeting will no doubt have a good effect. I hear it mooted that the Knights are contemplating the giving of a social evening to those who are opposed to their organisation. They have such a faith in their principles that they , consider ignorance the only cause of opposition.— [Own Correspondent.]
