HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held at the Board's offices, High-street, yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs. C. Aitkin (chairman), J. Gordon, J. Swales, Kidd, Bollard, Lennox, Dignan, and Garratt. Charitable Aid.—On the recommendation of the Charitable Aid Committee, Timothy O'Callaghan was re-admitted to the Costley Home. Richard Williams, iged 67, was admitted to the Costley Home. Mrs. Shea, aged 75, and John Hughes were also admitted to the Home. In reply to a question by Mr. Gordon, the Chairman stated that there was a resolution of the Board authorising the manager of the Costley Home to make public any dismissal from the Home by the Board. Finance.Accounts amounting to £872 7b Id were passed for payment. House Surgeon's Report.— House Surgeon reported that there were now 70 males and 35 females in the Hospital. Three deaths bad occurred since the last report. House Committee's Report.—The House Committee recommended (1) that the bath landing and passages on the upper floors, the nurses' pantries, and the* special surgical ward be painted ; (2) that the auxiliary wards be painted inside and outside before Christmas; (3) that Mr. Mercer be not reengaged, his term of three months having expired. On the motion of the Chairman the House Committee's report was adopted. Hospital Fees. The secretary of the Thames Hospital Board wrote asking the Board to reduce the price of maintenance in the Hospital from 4s to 2s 6d per day to Thames patients, especially as the Thames Hospital Board would be prepared to maintain patients from Auckland at the rate of 28 6d per day. The letter was received. An Application.—Mr. A. G. Kenderdine wrote stating that for two years he had occupied the position as dispenser in the Hospital, and inquired if the Board were dissatisfied in any way with the manner in which he has fulfilled his duty, and asking for a recommendation. The Chairman said that Mr. Kenderdine had not passed bis examination, and resigned a position which he was not legally qualified to bold. On the motion of Mr. Lennox, it was resolved to grant a testimonial to Mr. Kenderdine. Costley Home. manager reported that there were now 110 men and 38 women in the Home, being a decrease of three since the last return. Boarding Children Out.— Garratt pointed out that five months' ago a committee had been appointed to enquire into complaints re children being boarded out in Auckland. As yet no report had been received from the committee. Mr. Dignan said the children were all dealt with at the time as far as could be done. Mr. Bollard said the practice of boarding children out with paupers was simply rearing up a race of paupers. The Chairman said he was nob prepared to ventilate the matter in the absence of Mr. Mays, who had all the information on the subject in his possession. Mr. Gordon moved, "That the committee resent a report to the next meeting of the Board of what has been done." The motion on being put to the meeting was j carried. ft °
