THE CUNARD COMPANY. A Londou correspondent says :—" Ever since the formation of the Canard Company in 1839, and the building of the first four steamers of the company's fleet in that and the following year, Clyde people have never failed to take a keen "interest in the success of the undertaking, which was initiated in Glasgow by the late Sir George Burns (father of the present chairman of the company) Sir Samuel Cunard, and Mr. Robert Napier. Although Liverpool has always been claimed as the port of registry of the Cunard steamers, they have been almost exclusively built on the Clyde, involving the expenditure, locally, of some millions of money; the Clydesiders very naturally note with interest every scrap of news bearing on the company's great trans-oceanic enterprise, and in that spirit the fact that the Umbria has just broken her own famous record by about four hours (having made her westward pas-age in five days twenty-two hours), is, naturally, being made much of by Glasgow people, who have been watching the keen struggles of the past two years or so between the Inman liners and the White Star ships. I hear that the Umbria has now made 164 runs across the Atlantic, and has carried upwards of 100,000 souls !" PORT OF ONEHUNGA. DEPARTURES. Tak&puna, s.s., J. Grant, for the South.
