AUCKLAND AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the general committee of the Auckland Provincial Agricultural Association waa held yesterday in Messrs. W. J. Hurst and Co. rooms, Queen-street. There was a moderate attendance, and Mr. W. F. Massey presided. The Chairman said it had been the custom to hold a meeting of the general committee a month before the show in order thab the executive committee might report to them whab had been done, and to hear any suggestions that might be offered. They would have increased accommodation this year for horses and cattle, and a drafting yard was erected leading straight from the road, so thab cattle would not be able to run all over the place. They had also appointed judges and class stewards, and thought ib righto that their names should bo published. They were as follows :— Judges lighb horse stock: Messrs, R. :E. Mcßae, of Manaia, and W. Mcj Laughlin. Draught stock : Messrs. J. I Coombs, of Marton, and W. L. Orr, Greenlane. Cattle: Messrs. Christopher Day and N. Hunb. Fab cattle Messrs. Hellaby, Neilson, and Graham. Sheep: Messrs. C. Shepherd and R. B. Hamilton ; a third was to be appointed, but his answer had nob yet been received. Pigs : Messrs. J. Bollard and S. Gooseman. Poultry: Mr. A. A. White. Dairy produce: Messrs. Retemeyer, Maxfield, and Young Warren. Carters' prize : Messrs. J. J. Craig and W. Winstone. Dogs: Mr. D. McNiccol,Clevedon. The following gentlemen had been appointed stewards, and would nominate their colleagues :—Lighb horse stock : Mr. Caverhill. Draught stock : Mr. John Massey. Cattle: Mr. C. Washer. Fat cattle: Mr. Joseph May. Sheep: Messrs. Anderson and Kirkbride. Dogs: Mr. Robert Hall. Pigs: Mr. Christopher Pegler. Poultry: Mr. Morpeth. Dairy produce : Mr. Dunwoodie. Implements : Mr. Short. That, the Chairman said, was all the information the Executive Committee had to give. Mr. Kirkbride thought ib would be a mistake to have the same judges in successive years, bub he quite understood the difficulties the committee had in procuring the services of suitable judges. Mr. Wren pointed out thab nothing could he done now. Mr. John Philluts said thab the appointment of judges had been the most serious difficulty the committee had had to deal with. Several gentlemen in the South had beon written to, bub they could not come, as besides being a busy season with farmers their own shows were coming on, and they declined to act. Mr. Kirkbride said he did not in any way mean to question the action of the Executive Committee, for he knew their difficulties, bub he thought ib was a matter which should be borne in mind in respect of future shows. Mr. Wallace said there was no doubt that the best judges for sheep at all events were in the South, bub they could not come, and it showed the necessity for holding their show earlier. The show in Napier was held earlier than the Auckland show, although their season there was a month later. Mr. Kirkbride moved that the committee be instructed to appoint, if possible, a third judge for sheep who had not previously acted, and the motion was agreed to. Several other detail matters in connection with the schedule, and special prizes were discussed and explained by the chairman, after which the meeting terminated.
