DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT PORT CHARLES.
Since writing you I am sorry to say that our respected storekeeper Las had the bad luck to bo burned out. How the fire originated is a mystery, as Mr. Houghton saw everything safe when he locked up the store on August 25, and on the morning of August 2G, when he went down to the store, found it a smoking ruin. Everything is lost. Even his book? are burned. It is (supposed that the rats had overturned some matches on a shelf, and on the box falling the matches had ignited, and as there was some guru just underneath, it bad no doubt caught lire and caused the mishap. So far as is known there is no insurance on either store or goods, so the loss will be a severe one to Mr. Houghton, who has the sympathy of everyone in the settlement. What makes the matter worse is that Mr. Houghton had only just got the store into working order, and now he has to commence everything afresh.—[A Correspondent.]
