RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL.

[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Ngaruawahia, Thursday. At the sitting of the Raglan County Council vestenUy and ■ to-day, there were present:— The Chairman (Mr. Wilson), and Messrs. McGuirk, Whiteside, Calder, Hill, Cogswell, Brookes, and Mathias. Clerk. —There were 21 applications for the clerkship, of whom Mr. W. Conradi. of Wanganui, was elected, at & salary as clerk and wharfinger, of £74 9s per annum. Raglan-waif a Road.—With respect to the subsidy due to the Waipa-Raglan Road, a letter was received from the Survey Office, stating that when the certificate was received that the work had been done, the remaining £75 would be paid. Road Obstruction—A letter was received from the Lands and Survey Office with respect to the obstruction to the Waipa Road, made by Mr. Bruce. They had paid Mr. Bruce £40 compensation, but had heard that other persons were stopping the road. The letter seated that it was the duty of the Council to see that the roads were not obstructed.

Native Lands.— was resolved, "That the Council support the Taranaki Council in its endeavour to get individualised native lands amenable to the Rating Act." Improving a Road.—lt was resolved to expend a sum of £35 on the Waingaroa-Man-gapiko Road, the money to be found from the General Hidings Account. A Work Agreed To.—An application from Sergeant Forster, guaranteeing half the cost of £20 expended in making a road to his place, was agreed to, but the work was deferred till the Council were in better funds.

Defining Roads.— was resolved to urge upon the Government to define the roads from Opuatia to Mercer and Tuakau. Wharf Shed.—lt was resolved not to allow Mr. Phillips to take away the shed on the wharf.

Native Hostelry.—A motion proposed by Mr. Cogswell was carried, " That the resolution of the 11th August. 1891, as far as regards the rental demanded by the native Hostelry and Courthouse site at Raglan. b« rescinded, providing there shall be paid in lieu thereof by the Government one shilling per annum on each section as an acknowledgment of the Council's possession. Subsidy.—lt was resolved that a subsidy of £5 be paid to Mr. Vining towards the making of the main road to his land. Mr. Cogswell moved and Mr. Hill seconded, " That this Council cannot recommend the erection of a wharf at Te Akau at present, but when the west side of the harbour is placed under the jurisdiction of the County they will give permission to erect a wharf, and allow the Te Akau Company to use the wharf themselves free of charge on consideration of their erecting the said wharf. The Council reserving its right to purchase the wharf at a reasonable valuation at any time." Seeking Information.— the motion of Mr, Whiteside, it was resolved, "That the clerk write to the local harbour bodies reguesting information as to the limits of their jurisdiction, and that the Wharf Committee draw up a petition to the House claiming jurisdiction over the whole of the harbour under section 242, and the following sections of the Counties Act, 1886, and as per Order-in-Council duly gazetted." Dog Tax. —The clerk was instructed to get printed and posted up in the district 300 notices in Maori respecting the collection of the dog tax. License Fees. —A letter was received from the Government auditor asking how it was that only £lhf 15s had been received for each of the two Raglan licenses, when the licenses were £25 each, and demanding the difference. The explanation was that the houses were closed for three months out of the twelve, and the £1815s was the proportion of the payments for the nine months out of the twelve. It was resolved that & further demand be made upon Messrs. Barlow and Moon of £6 5s each, the balance of £25 due for the license fee, the Council having no power under the Act to make any reduction. Loan.-—Resolved, "That a special order for the £241 loan for the completion of the Raglan wharf be sent at once to the Treasury." "
