A correspondent), writing from Wellington, says : — " The facts in connection with Mr. Shera's motion for a committee on the railway routes have not, it seems, been fully stated. He saw by the Order Paper ■that the motion would not be called on the Thursday, for several Bills had precedence. The Government cannot give any facilities for private members' motions, only for Bills. Mr. Shera made certain of all this from' a lengthened interview with the Speaker, and saw the Premier on Monday and placed the whole case before him, and urged that the Government should propose the" Committee as the only possible course to attain the object. He suggested if Government refused that the best way then would be to bring a little gentle pressure to bear on the Government by moving an arftendirien't on the motion to go into Committee of Supply, then before the House. The Premier promised to consider the matter. Mr. Shera expected a reply from the Premier on Tuesday evening, when if the reply had been'unfavourable he would liAVe called the members together to consider the position and decide as to whether they would support the suggested amendment. Government ' would no doubt have given way rather than have a lengthened debate, which would be a good reason to give Wellington supporters. Some Auckland members seem to have a grievance because not consulted, forgetting that the whole inattet Was in the hands of a committee with whom Mr. Shera was in constant consultation. The Speaker informed Mr, Shera that no amendment would be in order which traversed any motion on the order p&p6r, hence his withdrawal of notice of motion. The replacing tlie notice of' motion by Mr. Palmer'' was manifestly inspired to get the Government out of the corner, and to block Mr. Shera's subsequent action for Auckland's benefit. Besides if the amendment had been put it would almost certainly have been carried."
