MURDEROUS ASSAULT IN MELBOURNE.

On Sunday, the 7th instant, Darby Redden, aged 55, was assaulted by four men in Smith-street, Collingwood, the men knocking him down and jumping on him, and kicking him. He died early on Wednesday from his injuries. The reason of the assault is not known, but the old man's cries awoke a man named Joyoe, who, looking out, witnessed the assault. Redden once owned the Oddfellows' Hotel, in Little Lonsdale-street, where some years ago his son was fatally stabbed during an affray and the murderer wa3 never discovered. Since then Redden's fortunes had been failing, and latterly he had led a vagrant sort of existence. Michael Macuamara has been arrested for the murder.
