BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The fortnightly meeting of the Board of Education was held yesterday morning. Present: Mesrs. S. Luke (chairman), R. /.v,, Mair, A. Grant, Moat, Buckhurst and Theo. Cooper. Chairman's Report.— report of the Chairman, ' which was read and adopted, contained the following items :—Ponsonby : Provision has been made for temporary supply of school stationery, pending completion of arrangements with the committee. Waikiekie : Committee has been referred to the terms of Mr. Babe's offer for the purchase of old school buildings. The resignation of Miss A. S. Dewar, assistant, Wellesleystreet school, was received. Balances.—The balances were as follow : -Education fund, credit £6249 14s sd; building fund (exclusive of £5000 at fixed deposit), debit, £4839 6s Id; Girls High School account, credit, £13 7s lOd. Banking.—A circular was read from the Bank of Now Zealand stating that an arrangement had been made by ail the banks whereby a uniform rate of commission and exchange shall be charged on all drafts arid remittances made, and on all collections of bills, cheques, and orders throughout New Zealand. The' matter was referred to the Executive Committee to consider ths disposal of the Board's banking account. Establishment op Schools.—A petition from residents of Hakerenui North for a school in that district was referred to the Inspector. An application from Grahamstown (Whangarei) was referred to the Inspector. The question of establishing ! a school at Taupaki (Woodhill) was referred back to the committee. Buildings,—Huanui (Whareora): It was resolved to have the site offered surveyed. Huia : An acre offered as a site for a school is to be surveyed. Kirikiri (Thames): The natives some time ago offered their school for purchase to the Board, but since withdrew their offer. It was resolved to open a temporary school in a cottage offered by Mr. Tizard, aud to take stops to procure a site. Rotorua : The contractor for the building of a teacher's house wrote stating that owing to the state of the roads he was unable to proceed with his contract as he could not get his timber past Oxford. It was resolved to grant the contractor two months' extension of time. It was resolved not to build a new school at Tauranga at present, as the inspector reported that the building would be sufficient for the requirements of the district for the next ten years. Grants for Repairs, &o.— City Schools Committee wrote stating that the walls of the Chapel-street School (a brick building) wanted attending to, as the building was damp and unhealthy. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Udy, to send the first portion of the architect's report to Mr. J. J. Holland, with the request that lie report to the Board on the matter. It was resolved to give the executive committee power to deal with the matter. Opua : A grant of £18 was ms.de for fencing. Swanson : The sum of £11 7s was granted for fencing.. Mount Albert School — deputation of four members of the Mount Albert School Committee waited upon the Board to lay before it certain complaints. Mr. W. H. Martin (chair stated that the school was badly lighted on the north side, and that it was necessary to make some improvement. Mr. Martin also complained that there was an insufficiency of hat-pegs in the porch. Another fireplace was required in the centre room. A male assistant teacher was also required for the school. The committee were naked to put their grievances in writing, when they would receive the consideration of the Board.

School Stationery. — The Ponsonby School Committee resolved to accept- the Board's terms for the supply of school stationery. Tenders, — The following tenders were received for (.he erection of a school building at Araparara : —Heron Brothers, Reinueru, £171 ; Geo. F. Blott, Ponsonby, £177; W. G. Smith, Ponsonby, £183; D.ivies and Evans, Ponsonby, £184; E. Wrigley, Eden Terrace, £1915 17s 6d; J. H. Spragg, Ponsonby, £209 ; C. Tong, Ponsonby, £225. The lowest tender, that of Heron Brothers, - was accepted. Tenders for the erection of a school at Kaeo were received as follow :— Heron Brothers, Remuera, £132; W. G. Smith, Ponsonby, £1:58; H. W. Bartlett, Karangahape Road, £145; Begg and Hows, Kaeo, £148 9s 6d ; E. Wrigley, Eden Terrace, £157.

A complaint—Mr. C. Nicholls (senior), wrote complaining that his son Cyrus Nicholls had been treated with undue severity in being expelled from the school. The matter was investigated by the Mount Eden School Committee, who decided that the teacher was justified in expelling the boy for gross misconduct. Mr Nicholls appealed to the Board against the committee s decision. It was resolved to forward the evidence sent by Mr. Nicholls to the Mount Eden School Committee.

Service in the Country.—Mr. George Thwaites and Mr. George Lippiatt wrote asking if the board had established a rule to the effect that an assistant should have been in charge of a small country school for at least two years before being appointed to the charge of a large city school. It was resolved on the motion of Mr. Grant, to reply that the Board considers it desirable that all assistants should have charge of all the classes in a small country school lor at least two years before being put in charge of a large school. Berksford-street School.—'l he question of appointing a first assistant master at the Beresford-street School, in place of Mr. C. M. Carter, who has been appointed headmaster of the Napier-street School, was adjourned for a fortnight Architects.—The appointment of Messrs. Mitchell and Watt as architects to the Board was confirmed, their period of six months' probation having expired. Board's Clerk. —On the motion of Mr. Grant the salary of Mr. J. J. Roche, clerk to the Board, was increased from £200 to £250. Salary Schemes. — The committee appointed to formulate a salary scheme reported that they had been unable to arrive at any agreement among themselves. Mr. Muir stated that Mr. Udy and himself were preparing a scheme, which they would submit to the next meeting of the Board. On the order paper were two notices of motion on this subject in Mr. Luke's name, and four in Mr. Grant's name. Mr. Udy proposed, and Mr. Buckhurst seconded, that the notices of motion stand over until the next meeting of the Board. Mr. Luke said he would this, on the condition that his notices of motion would be dealt with finally at the next meeting. Mr. Udy's motion was then put to the meeting and carried. Scholarship Examinations. — Mr. Grant Grant gave notice of motion, " That a committee be appointed to recast the subjects for scholarship examinations on the basis of syllabuses in the Regulations of Committee of H.M. Privy Council on Education."
