Notwithstanding all the trash that has been lately written by single- and others on the question of land tenure, it is eminently satisfactory to find that the large mass of the people still hold to the principle that freehold tenure is the correct thing. This surely proves that neither the intelligence nor the good sense of the people has been shaken by the teachings and fads of the land nationalisation school of writers. The results of the agricultural statistics collected in February last, and recently published, show that out of 41,224, the total number of holdings in the colony, 26,861 are freehold, and that out of the increase of holdings to the number of upwards of 3000 that took place during 1891, upwards of 2000 were freehold. In the provincial district of Auckland freehold tenure appears to be exceedingly popular. Out of the 9842 holdings 7117 are freehold, while 670 are partly freehold and partly rented. There are more holdings of over one acre in extent in the Auckland district than in any other district, the number of freeholds being greater, as the following figures will show :— Auckland, 7117 ; Otago, 5870 ; Canterbury, 4746 ; Wellington, 4187 ; Taranaki, 1594; Hawke's Bay, 1187 ; Nelson, 1474. —"Agricola." y * A Perfect Food.—The Medical Press and the faculty pronounce Cadbuvy's Coca absolutely pure and of the highest quality, free from added starch or sugar, and comforting, strengthening, and nourishing for old and young, robust and feeble.
