[BY telegraph—press ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Thursday. An address from Wellington residents to Sir George Grey, congratulating him on his 80th birthday, is to bo presented on the 22nd inst.
The Agricultural and Pastoral Association have rescinded a motion empowering them to make a deduction of 10 per cent, from all prizes at the next show. Mastkrton, Thursday. A man named William Thomas Tait was committed for trial to-day on a charge of perjury. In a civil action he swore positively that he was not a married man, but a certificate was put in showing that a person answering his description was married in Dunedin in ISBS.
Christchurch, Thursday. On Saturday ?5 men are to bo sent by the Labour Bureau to Jollie's Pass and 25 to Waitotara, road-making being the work provided in both cases. Mr. Mackay, chief clerk of the Bureau, leaves for Oamaru to select men for work on the Livingstone Road. He states that there are several men here over 60, for whom it is difficult to find work, but who could be provided for if relief farms were in operation. Westport, Thursday. The celebration of Arbor Day, postponed from last week on account of the wet weather, took place to-day.- ISline huudred school children were present, and trees were planted in tha school reserves. Dunedin, Thursday. Wm. Royse, an old identity, died yesterday, aged 54. As a member of the farm of Royse, Mudie, and Co., he was connected with establishing direct steam communication with Melbourne, and was arent for the Aldinga and Omeo. He was in business on the West Coast for some time, and afterwards resided for some time at Wyndham, Southland, The Harbour Board revenue for the month shows an increase of £535 over the corresponding month last year, while the expenditure shows a decrease of £1011.
