THE GOLDFIELDS.

[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Thames, Wednesday. Sharemarket—Alburnia sales 6s, sellers 63 3d; Cambria, sellers la 6d ; Hazelbank, sales 3s 3d, sellers 3s 6d ; May Queen, sales 3s lid, 4s, sellers 4s 3d; buyers 3s lid; Moanataiari, sellers 6s; Orlando, sellers 5d ; Saxon, sellers Is 3d. AVaiotahi. — This company's usual monthly cleaning up and retorting eventuated to day, and resulted in return of 1990z lOdwts melted gold, for which 207 tons quartz won from all parts of the mine were treated.

Waihi.—The quantity of ore crushed with 55 stamps for the four weeks ended the 28th ultimo, was 1500 tons, the value of the bullion being £3770.

MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Saxon.—The drive on the continuation of the new reef through the No. 2 break has been advanced a further distance of 18 feet: total, 30 feet, and good strong colours of gold have been met with in breaking down. As I am anxious to pick up this lean at No. 4 level, I commenced sinking upon it on Saturday last, as, by commencing operations at No. 4, the cost of driving the No. 3 level will be saved, as the level can be found when we stope up to it. Part of the men are still engaged sloping out tho remainder of the block on the new reef underneath the level going towards the Trenton boundary. Gold is met with here pretty regularly in breaking down, and occasionally a pound or two of stone selected, but nothing worth telegraphing about. We have now got over 70 loads of quartz on hand, and I purpose starting the battery on it next Monday, when I hope to obtain a satisfactory return. Norfolk. The rise has been extended a further height of five feet. We have broken through into Darrow's low level, and are making fair headway with cleaning it out. The total distance of rise from the back of our present level to the floor of Darrow's is 71 feet.

Cambria. eighth stopo on the main reef above No. 'J level has been brought forward to the Darwin old stopes,as the bottom of this stope is on a level with the back of the old stopes. I intended, as you are already aware by a previous report, to have continued this stope, but the ground we find is very much broken and caved in at this point. I have decided to rise some 30 feet back, and bring forward the ninth stope. Good colours of gold were seen through the quartz when last breaking down in the eighth stope. No. 3 level : The leading stope on No. 6 leader is still in progress ; the leader is at present divided into several veins, from which some good picked stone is frequently saved. Very little quartz lias been broken from the main reef during the week in the third stope going towards the old rise ; this stone has to be shot out to a considerable width to enable several gold-bearing veins to be taken out. The cross leader in the fourth stope continues to look well, and shows gold when breaking down. The third stope on the main reef and new loader is still in progress, and during the week have both shown a little gold. The leader being driven on from the second stope on the stringers continues to look promising, and also yields a little picked stone. This leader, I find, was cut and driven on some '20 feet westward from a crosscut put into the footwall of the western branch of No. 7 leader about two years ago at No. 3 level. We have stopped driving on this leader from the second stope on the stringers, and have resumed work upon it from the crosscut at No. 3 level. No. 4 level : No. 7 footwall leader in the third stope has yielded a few pounds of very good picked stone during the week. Crushing for the company is still pro ceeding. May Queen. —The drive at No. 2 level on No. 4 reef has only been extended 10 feet for the week, in consequence of meeting with a hard conglomerated sandstone-boulrter interlaced with flinties and mineralised veins. It did not extend to the bottom pr left side of the drive, where the good country still exists. By its appearance a few feet further driving will get through it. There is quartz now making on the left. The men in the shaft are making good headway. The shaft is now repaired down to No. 3 leVel, and guides in to the surface, and are now repairing down to No. 4, which I expect to have ready this week. The two men that were stoping out the little block west are removed to No. 3 level to cut out that chamber so as to be ready for the cages. The contractor for erecting the machinery is making slow progress. He is having splendid weather, but the small finishing work generally takes longer than we expect. However, this week ought to see him through if he pushes the work.

Lone Hand.Stoping operations above the low level, upon the junction of the Moa and Manchester reefs, are being carried on as usual. The second stope has now been carried along a distance of 6") feet from the end of ground. The nature of the country in the back of this stone seems to be improving as the stone advances. The Moa or hangingwall leader is pinched up very small at present, and is still inclined to bear away from the footwall leader, leaving a large horse of mullock between both leaders as the stopes ascend. I have, therefore, decided to leave the hangingwall leader for the present, and carry on stoping operations upon the Manchester or footwall reef, which is about 10 inches in thickness. The third 3tope east of the junction is also being carried along upon the footwall leader, which will average about 10 inches in thickness, in which, during the last day or two, good dabs of gold have been seen when breaking down the leader. The nature of the country in this stope has very much improved lately; it now being of a good linn class of sandstone for gold-bear-ing reefs. New Fearnought.—The rise has been extended four feet; the ground still continuing extra hard, but passing through very favourable country, intermixed with numerous small veins of mineralised quartz. Water is increasing, which denotes that we are approaching the desired locality, when good ventilation will be secured.

Magnolia.—l have driven during the week seaward eight feet, making a total of 16 feet. The reef is fully three feet wide at present, and we have seen a few dabs of gold in it. There is some splendid bloeky mineral coining in the face now, and I don't think it will be long before we get good gold. I have extended the surface drive on No. 3 reef six feet during the week. The reef here is about three feet in thickness. It is very gooJlooking stone for gold, of a very soft rusty brown nature.

Sylvia— For the week the various works in your mine are making fair progress. I let a contract to McAuley and party for driving a crosscut in the hancingwall in the western side ol' the break in No. 3 level. They have driven 15 feet since starting. They cut a reef in this crosscut after driving 12 feet. It is two feet_ in thickness, showing some good mineral indications. The course and underlie of this reef corresponds with the Little Agnes or main reef, and will probably turn out to be the same. I intend to do some work on this reef next week. No. 4 level: In this level the men are making fair progress. They have driven 10 feet for the week. The ground is Siore favourable for progress. There are four men engaged in this level two shifts. I have not yet cot the drive on the Lord Nelson reef repaired, but I hope to be able to see the face of the drive next week. There is nothing new in the stopes in No. 2 level.

Orlando.—The drive has been extended six feet last week, total distance now being 30 feet. The ground is of much the same character, as in my last report, but tighter than it was. I have had a couple of holes in the reef which contain patches of antimony, but otherwise there is no further change to report. Shall break down more of the reef about the middle of the week.

Junction.—The drive going west has been advanced eight feet through a good class of country. There is a lot of mineral in the quartz that is being broken out. This reef goes right through the company's ground, and we are driving towards the Eureka, and our prospects of meeting with something in this direction are good. The rise is now up a distance of fourteen feet. The reef is two feet in thickness, and still heavily mineralised. The country is of a good description.
