VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
WAIROA RIFLES. The third competition for a medal presented to the Wairoa Rifles by Captain Herr Carl Schmitt, and the first period class firing was gone through on Saturday, July 30. The practice commenced at ten a.m. There were thirty competitors on the ground. The day was all that could be desired, and the shooting on the whole was good.> Lieutenant L. Wallis headed the list with 64 points. Volunteers A. Couldrey and J. Ballantine, 63 points each. Lieutenants Wallis and Bell superintended the practice. An inspection of the corps was held at the Wairoa Public Hall at two p.m. Before the parade was dismissed Captain Crawford informed the members of the corps that some time during this month Colonel Fox, the commandant of the New Zealand Forces, would inspect the Company, and at that parade he hoped to see a full muster, and that the arms, accoutrements, &c., will, be found perfectly clean and in good order.—{Own Correspondent.]
