THE TAX ON IMPROVEMENTS.
SIR GEORGE GREY'S ATTITUDE. [by TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. ] Ellington, Wednesday. There is considerable speculation as to the attitude which Sir George Grey will take over the tax on improvements, a question on which he has very strong opinions. Several members think Sir George will propose in committee on the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill that improvements should be exempt from taxation, and it is even asserted that he would possibly carry such an amendment against the Government. If this were the case it would seriously disarrange the Treasurer's finance, as the removal of the tax on improvements would, of course, mean the loss of a large sum of revenue. Sir George has not yet expressed his intention of moving in this direction, but as the amending tax bill has not yet been circulated, its provisions are of course not definitely known at present.
