THE PROPOSED REDUCTION IN CABLE RATES.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Tuesday. In reference to the cable message from Adelaide ro reduction of cable rates, Mr. Ward states that the whole matter is premature, and he is still negotiating , with the Australian Governments on the subject. Aβ far as the New Zealand Government is concerned, nothing definite has been agreed to. Mr. Ward was somewhat surprised that the information contained in the cable had been given publicity to by the South Australian Government. The reduction mentioned in the message is a sweeping one, as the prosent rate from Adelaide is lie for the first ten words, and it is proposed to reduce this to ss. The present rate from Europe to Now Zealand ie 10-i 2d or 14s 3d per word, according to route. The arrangements made by the South Australian Government with the Cable Company provide for a reduction of 4s 6d per word.
