OUT-DOOR SPORTS.
J A five-mile road race, from Onehunga to Auckland, between E. Reynolds, the cyclist, and A. Clarke, the long-distance runner, the latter receiving ten minutes start, took place on Saturday afternoon, June 18. The muddy state of the road, owing to the recent wet weather, played into the hands of the runner, and he passed Wattie's Hotel five minutes before the cyclist. Clarke eventually won by two minutes. Mr. J. Lecky acted as started, Mr. W. Winks as referee, and Mr. A. G. Buchanan as stakeholder. The race was for a trophy valued at £4. On June 17 the members of the City Rowing Club held a social in the St. George's Hall to wind up their season. The affair was a most enjoyable and successful one, about ninety couples being present, and dancing was kept up till an early hour next morning. During one of the intervals the medals and trophies won by the members of the club were presented as follows ! Trial fours : Medals presented by Mr. John Marshall, president of the club, Messrs. Philips, Young, Ivitl, Allen, Bailey (cox). Lake Regatta:—Maiden Gigs: Messrs. P. Purcell, A. 11. Smith, Diggens. The club medals were also presented to the two winning crews of the annual trial fives. After the presentation a very cordial vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs. John Marshall and Taylor, the donors of the medals to the club.
A conference of the metropolitan jockey clubs commenced in Wellington on July 8, and was attended by the following delegates : —Auckland Racing Club, Mr. J. Kirkwood; Canterbury Jockey Club, Mr. G. G. Stead and the Hon. L. Walker; Dunedin Jockey Club, Hon. G. McLean and Mr. H. S. Fish M.H.R. ; Wellington Racing Club, Mr. H, L).' Bell and Mr. Duthie, M.H.R. ; Wanganui Jockey Club, Mr. Freeman R. Jackson and Dr. Earle; Taranaki Jockey Club, Messrs. A. Standish and R. G. Bauchope; Nelson Jockey Club, Mr. H. M. Lyon: Marlborough Racing Club, Mr. C. J. W. Griffiths; Greymouth Jockey Club. Mr. A. R. Guinness, M.H.R., and Mr. 11. M. Lyon; Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, Captain Russell, M 11. R., and the Hon. J. 1). Ormond, M.L.C. The proposal to form a New Zealand Jockey Club was deferred. The Council of the New Zealand Football Association have decided to hold an interprovincial Association football tournament at Christchurch on August 26 and 27. Teams have entered from Auckland, Wellington, Otago, and Canterbury.
