ENGLISH GENERAL ELECTIONS.

PROGRESS OF THE CAMPAIGN.

MR, GLADSTONE ELECTED.

OUTRAGE IN IRELAND.

A RAILWAY LINE CUT. Press Association.— Telegraph—Copyright.

London, July 13. In the Midlothian election, Mr. Gladstone polled 5750, and his opponent, Colonel Wauchop, 5077.

Mr. Gladstone's majority was 697, and the Unionists declare that this is virtually a defeat.

[On the last occasion on which the Midlothian seat was contested with Mr. Gladstone his opponent, Mr. Dairy tuple (Conservative), polled 324S against Air. Gladstone's 7579, giving Mr. Gladstone a majority of 4631.]

The Liberal cry throughout the Midlothian election was, " Vote for the Grand Old Working Man." The Tory cry was, "Vote for a resident and the Church of Scotland."

The latter had the monopoly of the carriages, and they claim a majority in Edinburgh. It is believed that the working men and the Irish voted for Mr. Gladstone, and the Churchmen for Colonel Waucliop. The railway line was cut near Clare to .prevent a special tram conveying voters reaching the place in time. Precautions nad been taken, however, to send a detached engine on ahead, and this saved the train. The engine was capsized, but those on board escaped unhurt.
