BANK OF NEW ZEALAND ESTATES COMPANY.

SALE OF LAND IN SOUTH CANTERBURY. Timarct, April 20. The first sale of the Bank of New Zealand Estates Company's land was held here today, and was well attended by the farmers of the district, fully 300 of them being present, besides others, but not many wore bidders. Few, if any, strangers were present, and the purchasers are all old settlers in the neighbourhood. A start was made with Riverslea in the order and with results as below. The bidding for some lots was keen, in other cases where a sale was effected, slow.

Total of Riverslea freehold sold, 1720 acres realising £29,431. The goodwill of leases, two education reserves near Riverslea, were offered, one of 399 acres, lease five years to run, rent £171 17s fid per annum. This was keenly competed for, and was bought by W. McCully at £204. For the large reserve ] 192 acres, lease six years to run, rental £615 13s lOd, no offer was made. In the Arowhenua estate, lots remote from the homestead were offered first. Lots 18 and 19, 180 acres, and lot 20, 100 acres, brought no bid. For 51, 360 acres, bids started at £6 and stopped at £7 10s, when they were passed in. Lot 14, 149 acres, was sold to W. Page at first and last bid, £6. Six or seven other lots passed without offer, and the auctioneer stopped the sale as, if the upper block was not sold, the lower must be retained to work it. Any section passed, he explained, was open to private treaty. The principal buyers are already landowners close to Riverslea.
