The anniversary of St. John's Wesleyan Church, Ponsonby, was celebrated last evening by a soiree and public meeting. At half-past; six a very large number of members of the congregation and their friends sat down to a sumptuous tea, the tables being presided over by Mesdames Laws, Syicons, Mourant, Butler (2), (ioodacre, Main, Horsley, Blomfield, Hewin, and Miss Ward, who were assisted by other ladies of the congregation. After tea the gathering adjourned to the church, where the public meeting was held, Mr. T. Allen presiding. The annual report showed that good work had been accomplished in the various departments during the past year ; but although the exodus, of which they had frequently to complain on former occasions, had ceased to affect them, the attendance at the services showed but little improvement. The Sunday-school was well officered and in a flourishing condition. The balance-sheet showed the total receipts to be £276 16s Id, and the expenditure (including a balance from last year of £98 12s Id) £336 6s lid, which left a balance due to the bank of £59 10s lOd. During the evening interesting addresses were delivered by the Revs. W. Morley, T. S. Forsaith, and C. H. Laws.
