For the last few days a notification has appeared in our columns that a member of the Council of the Auckland University College fell to be elected by the members of the General Assembly resident in the Auckland Provincial District; that Mr. Jackson Palmer, M.H.R., and Mr. J. H. Upton had been nominated, and that a poll would take place on Monday, the 23rd of May. The appointment of three members of the University College by the members of the General Assembly was a usurpation for which there was never any excuse. _ When the Bill constituting the University Council was before the House, it suddenly struck the members that it would be a fine thing to keep three appointments in their own hands, and they did it. Outside, nobody had ever thought of making the members electors of the Council. We Protested against the thing at the time, ecause in the same way the members , of the House might seize as perquisites I any offices they thought fit. However, I

Now tbit the precedent has been created, in a ij probability ey will never travel out of their own lirqle.
