NEW ZEALAND RIFLE MEETING.

SECOND DAY.

[by telegraph.—press association.]

Trenthabi, Saturday. The high wind prevailing at the camp all day interfered with the rapid progress of firing, as men necessarily took a longer time in aiming, as most of the shooting was at extended distances. The match begun yesterday was concluded in the forenoon, but owing to a mistake in the score sheets several errors appeared in the original prize list. The others who scored well were Gebbie (of Dunedin), 46 ; Henry (Oamaru), Jeffries (Wellington), W. Ballinger (Wellington), Proudfoot (Port Chalmers), and Cameron (Tenui), 44. On resuming after lunch the wind dropped somewhat, but was still puffy, consequently, there was no tall scoring, tho highest being Robertson (of the Peninsula) with 44. The others who fired well were Kennedy (Napier), 43 ; Private McLean (Dunedin), 42; Doughty (Auckland), 41 ; Dougall (Christchurch), Purnell (Wanganui), and Love (Wanganui), 40. The following were counted out: —AlcDiarmid, Fraser, Skinner, Leslie, Preston, Begg, Waring, Wilson, and A. Ballinger. Trentham, Sunday. This morning, shortly after daylight, a drenching rain sot in, and after falling for two hours the wind changed and the weather cleared. The men were placed at discomfort owing to several tents leaking, but a large number of competitors were in town. There is a good deal of grumbling at the range, but this is probably duo more to the unfavourable weather than to the range itself. As ib will be seen from the positions for the championships mentioned below, many of the "old stagers" aro coming to the front, showing already that the more experienced men can hang on. The shooting, however, has so far not been so good as at Hawke's Bay last year, but then at the latter place the weather was good throughout. Last year the opening match was won with a score of 97, while this year the first money was secured with 89. In the second match 90 wonabNapier, while here 82 was tho highest score. In the Marlborough match two off tho possible secured the first money last year, while here it was four away. The firing points for 300 yards are very soft, and will not be improved by the heavy rain this morning. There is some talk of having the firing there at standing position, which, if carried out, will cause no end of grumbling among competitors. Only 17 shots per man are to bo fired at 200 yards throughout the meeting, but it is expected that the Council will think twice before ordering them to be fired standing. Messrs. McCarthy, of Portobello, have had to leave for home owing to sickness in tho family. Two out of nine matches counting for the Belt have concluded, and the following are the highest positions : —

Taylor, Auckland _ 123 Puriiell, Wanganui 119 I'arslow, Auckland 119 Doughty j Auckland 119 Humphries, Napier 119 F. Jones, Waikari ... 118 Blanc, Masterton 117 Kennedy, papier 117 Proudfoot, Port Chalmers 11(3 Ttobcrtnoii; Peninsula 110 Ross, Napier 116 King, Oamaru .. 115 John McLean, Dunedin 115 Richardson, Dunedin 115 Spiers, Oamaru 115 The Champion Belt winners firing at this meeting are : Ballinger (1879), (1880), Churton (1884), Remington (1880), Purnell (1888), i'arslow (1889), Williams (1890), Kruse (1891), and the aggregates of those not in the above are : Ballinger, 112 ; Remington, 109 ; Williams, 108 ; Churton, 101 ; Okey, 93. The weather has now cleared, and it is beautifully fine this afternoon. The Wanganui Match of ten shots at 500 yards will be fired in the forenoon tomorrow, and on its completion the Nelson Match, seven shots at each 500, 600, and 700 yards.
