THE BERLIN RIOTS.
REPEATED CONFLICTS WITH THE POLICE.
DISORDERLY SCENES.
THE SITUATION CRITICAL.
SHOPS ORDERED TO RE CLOSED. Press Automation.—Electric Telfi/rnph. — Copyritih t. Berlin, February 28. Thousands assembled in front of the Imperial Palace at noon yesterday, and it was only after iv stubborn resistance that the police were able to disperse them by the free use of swords. The Emperor and Empress drove through the streets in the afternoon and were greeted with respect. At six o'clock in the evening the police dispersed another mob which had gathered in the Halksehe Market, again using their swords. Many disorderly scenes took place in the quarters occupied by the working classes. Later on there were severe conflicts in Rosenthal, Brunner, and Frankfort streets. The situation at one time became critical, as the mob were ottering determined resistance to the police. The latter were forced to make several charges with drawn swords, and eventually the rioters gave way before them, and were dispersed. Many were wounded, and about eighty arrests were made. The people were ordered to close their shops and remain indoors. To-day mounted gendarmes have been called out, and elaborate precautions taken, as it is feared there will be more rioting during the course of the day. Rerun, February 29. Owing to the vigorous measures taken by the German authorities to repress disorder the riots in Berlin are regarded as over.
