MEETING OF MAORIS.

A large native meeting took place at Maioro, near Waiuku, on February 22. Throe hundred and sixty natives were present, all from various parts, some from Waikato Heads and Manukau Heads, and soma from Kohanga and Waiuku. The object of the meeting was to hear of the great work of Korei Kaihau. Tho meeting commenced at eight p.m. One of the principal chiefs opened tho meeting by saying, I will do all that I am instructed to do by Kerei Kaihau, and feel it a pleasure to be in his service, as I know he is doing great work for the Maori race and the country. Kerau Kaihau instructed us that if Che surveyor insisted upon putting tho trig station up, we were to take it down and throw it sway into the creek. 1 bid you,, all the different tribes here assembled, to be stout-hearted, and cat plenty and drink, and rejoice to think that our friend is penned in gaol. What is it for Just because of his doing great work for the whole Maori race. Ho is fighting against our enemy, the Government. My last word to you all is to bo brave and noble-hearted, anil put your shoulders to the wheel. The other chiefs expressed the same opinion. Henare Kaihau said : Now listen to me all you tribes here assembled. If you insist upon carrying on your foolishness you all will have to suffer tho consequences. Do not aggravate the Government, forTawhiao does nob want to aggravate the Government. I bid you all to go back to your places of abode, and put your shoulders to the plough, and grow plenty. You people must not run away with the idea that the Government's notions are just like a child ; it is not to be played with. All the natives stood up and said : We will not take your advice. If you were Kerci Kaihau then we would listen to you with pleasure. As it is, we will carry out his works. Wo know ho is doing a work for lie Maori race and the country. Only four individuals took part with Henare Kaihau. The talk lasted from ten p.m. till nine a.m. next morning.
