Spurlinß reports of the New Zealand hemp market, under date of January 21, as follows New Zealand hemp has attracted more attention during the past fortnight, and prices generally are fully 10s to 20s higher than those last month. The improvement in sisal and advices of closing the mills in New Zealand has imparted some stimulus to our markets. Arrivals since have been trifling, and the quantities brought forward at auction very small, nearly all of the latter finding buyers. Wellington, middling to barely fair, £19 15s to £20 5s ; fair to fully fair, £20 10s to £21; good, £22 to £22 10s. Marlborough, good, £22 10s to £2.' J. Auckland, good fair, £22 to £22 5s ; good to line, £2'5 10s; re-dried wreck hemp (out of condition), middling, £17 up to £18 15s. Holders now seek a further advance, and £21 10s spot has been paid for barely fair Wellington. Arrival business has been checked by the higher demand of shippers. 200 tons 01 [rood Auckland and Wellington, January-February, are reported at £21, c.i.f., and at which there are few sellers. Good Wellington now held at £21, c.i.f.. extra fine £2.1 To-day 100 tons good Wellington reported at £21 5s ; 50 tons good Auckland at £22, c.i.f. Market closing very firm. Arrivals of New Zealand hemp since last mail are : Camanaanrl Star of Victoria, with 596 bales. The following are the prices current Wellington : Fine to extra, £23 to £24: good, 122 to 1:22 10s ; good middling to fair, £21 to £21 10s : common to middling, £19 10s to £20 10b ; low and ordinary, nominal, £19. Auckland : Fine to extra, nominal, £23 10s I to £24 10s ; good, £22 10s to £23 ; good middling to fair, £21 to £21 10s ; common to middling, £"20 10s to £21 ; low and ordinary, nominal, £19 to £19 10s. The English wheat market is changing for the worse, and the American and continental are declining. The present value of English red wheat at Mark Lane is 35s : do. white, 37s 6d. The forward business of Australasian cargoes is inactive. Arrivals of foreign wheat are large. There are no cargoes of Australasian wheat olf the £oast or in ports of call. A cargo of wheat per ,/Eolus, from Port Pirie, sold at 38s 4id. THE LONDON WOOL SALES. London, February 28. The Statist calculates that there will be an increase of a quarter of a million bales of wool for sale this year, and a further fall in prices is quite possible. The weakened state of credit and the operation of the McKiuley tariff have causcd a general shrinkage in trade. THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE. London, February 28. There is not very much frozen meat in stock. The prospects of the trade are excellent, provided that the shipments are moderate and regular. The intention of New South Wales Government to subsidise the frozen meat industry is not looked upon with favour here, as it is thought it will have a tendency to I glut the market.
