VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
THE CAMPBELL VASE. The shooting for the handsome vase presented to the four rifle companies by Dr. J. L. Campbell took place at the Mount Eden Range on Saturday last. Only three teams competed, viz. : Victorias, City Guards, and Newtons, the Royal Irish not entering a team. The Victorias, to use a sporting phrase, " led from the jump," and succeeded in winning by 21 points from the City Guards, who were 13 points ahead of the Newtons. The winning team are to be presented with five gold medals, while their officers will 'have the honour of the custody of the Vase for 12 months. The afternoon was anything bub favourable for good shooting, as there was a strong, baffling wind blowing, while a thick smoke from some adjacent fire completely enshrouded the butts at times, which accounts for the poor scores made by some of the "cracks." Volunteer T'heo. Fairs was the only one to reach three figures, his shooting at the 300 and 400 yds, under such unfavourable circumstances, being really first-class. The competition was carried out in a most friendly spirit, the conducting of which was in the hands of Major Skinner, who, on the call of Lieutenant Somers, was awarded three hearty cheers. On the call of Lieutenant Dormer three cheers were given for the winning team, who responded by giving three cheers for the Guards and Newtons. The ranges were 200, 300, 400, 500 yds, seven shots at each range. The following are the scores VICTORIAS. 200 300 400 5"0 Tl. yds yds yds yds Private Then. Fairs _ 27 29 31 15 102 Private M. The Auckland Naval Artillery held a drill at Fort Cautley, for the purpose of competition at the big-gun drill, but the attendance was small. There were only -JO of the corps present under Lieutenant Little. Colonel Goring and SergeantMajor Bush superintended the firing, which was from one of the 7-inch muzzle-loading guns at Fort Cautley. The shooting was at varied ranges in the Rangitoto Channel, at standing targets and moving objects. The firing was, on the whole, fairly accurate. The moving object was a Rob Roy canoe, towed 400 yards after a steam launch, and a shot was sent bo close to this that those on shore could not for some time tell whether it was shattered or not, for it was covered with spray raised by the shot.
