CROWN LANDS IN THE PARISH OF OTAU.
Our Clevedon correspondent writes : —" It may not be generally known that there is upwards of 12,000 acres of Grown Lands in the parish of Otati. This block is open for selection on perpetual lease, deferred payment, or cash at 10s per acre. The land is all covered with bush, and the soil is really good, and is only between four and five miles from the Wairoa Landing and the Clevedon Post Office and Telephone Station. Recently, six settlers have taken up 2350 acres of this land, and are much pleased with it. Messrs. C. G. Of.way and Clair have been the surveyors for the selectors, and they also say that if it was generally known to the public that such good land was to be had so cheaply, and bo convenient to steamer and post office, and train, that it would be all taken up in one week's time. Last session of Parliament £400 was voted for the purpose of opening out a good road to this'land. Several months ago the Crown Lands Commissioner instructed Mr. J. I. Phillipps, surveyor, to explore and lay out a road to this land from Ness Valley. Immediately after Mr. Phillipps made a plan of the proposed road, the Wairoa Road Board was instructed by the Crown Lands Commissioner to take the land for the road through the Public Works Act, and that the Government would pay the cost of the same. As yet no steps have been taken in this matter, and as the people who have taken up land are anxious to settle on it, it is to be hoped the Government will see that this matter is attended to without delay." ______
