NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last night. Present: Messrs. Kent (Mayor), Whyman, Laxon, Angus, Edgerly, Stone, Randall, and Heron. Rates.—A letter was received from Mr. Patrick O'Hearne asking for some work under the borough to enable him to pay his rates. He would be willing to give up half his wage* each week, Ib was decided that the applicant be offered pieco work. An Encroachment. —A communication ■was received from the Bank of New Zealand Estates Company, with reference to the notice received from the Council to remove the stonewall around their Morrow-atreeb property. It was pointed out that the encroachment was only comparatively trifling, varying from 12 inches to 11 feet. The Councn was asked to allow the wall to remain in its present position until there was Bome urgent necessity to have it removed. The company would remove it to its proper position at any time when called upon to do bo. The request wan granted. A Crossing.—Messrs. Hancock and Co.
applied for a crossing opposite their bottling entrance in Kyber Pass road. They were prepared to pay half the cost. The appli- 1 cation was granted, subject to the approval of the Streets Committee. Balances.— General account (debit), £84 2b lid ; waterworks account (credit), £176 15s 7d ; interest account (credit), £14 8s (id. Duplicate Works.—ln accordance with notice given, the Mayor moved, "That duplicate works for the water meter be ordered." The Mayor said that new works were not absolutely required at the present time, but still the present works were nhowing signß of wear. It was to tho interest of tho Council to have the duplicate works ready for use in case of an emergency. Mr. Edgerly could not believe that now works were required bo soon. He would move, "That Messrs. Stone, Angus, and Randall be appointed a committee to consider the whole matter, and report to tho Council." • Niohtsoil Contract. — Mr. Whyman moved, "That the resolution of the Council, giving Mr. Stockley three months' notice of the termination of his contract for removal of nigbtsoil, be rescinded." He abated that his reason for so moving was that the resolution referred to was irregular and not in accordance with standing orders. Mr. Randall seconded. The motion was carried.
