POLICE COURT.— Tuesday. [Before Dr. Giles, E.M.]. Drunkenness. — One first offender was fined ss, or, in default, 24 hours' imprisonment with hard la bour. William Spear, for a second offence, was fined 10s, or, in default, 48 hours' imprisonment. Provoking Language.--George Jackson was charged with using insulting language in the City Hall on January 25, with intent to provoke a breach of the peace. Accused pleaded guilty to the charge. The evidence showed that accused had been abusive to a lady in the City Hall during the progress of an entertainment there on the eveuing of January 25. Dr. Gilee said that there was a previous conviction against accused, and that this sort of language could not be permitted in a public place. He fined accused 10s, or, in default, 48 hours' imprisonment. Alleged Wife Dksektion. — Samuel Johnston was charged with unlawfully deserting his wife at Auckland on the 21st day of January, 1592. Mr. Napier appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Cotter for the defendant. On the application of Mr. Cotter, the case was adjourned till next day, the defendant being liberated on his own recognisance of £50. MAUNGATUROTO R.M. COURT. Monday, January 18. [Before air. H. W. Bishop, K.M.] Birch v. Gloveu. —This was a claim for debt amounting to £7 19s Bd, and judgment was given for plaintiff by default for full amount, with costs 18s. Tkavers v. Jones —This was a claim for £24 11s 6d, but, as there was no appearance, the case was struck out. Sterling v. Herewini Mihaka.— This was a claim for debt, amounting to £5 14s 6d, and judgment was entered for plaintiff by confession, with costs £1 2s. McMurdo v. Rowsell.—This was a claim for auctioneer's commission, 14s ; but was settled out of Coutt. Otamatea County Council v. Clark. —This was a claim for rates amounting to £2 17s 3d. As conflicting letters had been received from the Property Tax Department by both the plaintiff and defendont regarding the latter's valuation, the case was adjourned till next Court day.—[Own Correspondent.]
