ROTORUA NEWS.
[BT TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Rotorua, Monday. A deputation of Europeans is likely to wait upon Mr. Kelly, M.H.R., who is now here, to ask him when in Wellington, whence he intends to proceed shortly, to interview the Government on the long-pending township question, and urge them to expedite the settlement of it as being of even greater importance to the residents than the forming of the railway line. A young man named Paraki is reported to have attempted to commit suicide to-day by drowning in the Utuhicia River. He was seen to approach the water, and after leaving a letter 011 the bank walk into the stream and lie down. Au alarm having been given quickly, a son of Mr. H. Mitchell,in company with a native named Wi Matai, soon dragged the foolish young man out, little the worse for his immersion. The letter he left on the river bank was addressed to his wife, with whom he has not been on friendly terms of late, and stated that he meant to put an end to his life. The tourist traffic during the past week was 54 arrivals. There are now 87 remaining at the hotels, and six patients in the sanatorium. A party of tourists ascended the summit of Mount Tarawera on Saturday, being extremely pleased with their trip. The party as usual tried the effect of _ driving a stick a few inches in the ground, with"the result that it was quickly scorched. A new opal portrait of the late Edwin Cambridge has recently been received from London, to replace the one at present in the monument, which has been somewhat damaged by the weather.
