The Times says it is not surprised at the result of the Rossendale election, and characterises the success of the Gladstone party as a victory of a kind. The Daily News looks upon the contest as the most important since the last general election, and declares that the brilliant triumph achieved by Mr. Gladstone and his followers proves that the public dissent from the contention that the Liberal policy is a sham. Paris, January 25. The French press are in ecstacy over the result of the Rossendale election which they contend has sounded the death knell of the Salisbury administration and jingoism in Egypt.
