ELTHAM, STRATFORD AND MANAIA. The Egmoxt Farmers' Union (Limited) Report.—On Friday, the 15tli instant, we held a clearance sale of stock, furniture, &c., at Eltham, on behalf of Mr. W. VV. Mitchell, who is leaving the district, also of stock for Mr. T. K. Harrold. The household goods brought good money, but the stock did not realize quite so much as was expected, particularly the horses, which were a well-bred useful lot. On Tuesday, the 19th instant, we held our second sale at Stratford, when a fair number of cattle were submitted for auction. The attendance was small, but this is easily accounted for by Messrs. Nolan, Tonks, and Co.'s sale, at Eltham, falling on the same date. In passing we would remark it is expected that this will be altered after our next Stratford sale, as members of the district are asked to meet at our yards after the sale is over, with a view to fixing a more suitable date, and we trust the meeting will be strongly attended. Bidding for cattle was on the whole brisk, and most lines were sold under the hammer. We quote : Two-and-a-half-year-old steers, £4 5s to £4 10s; 12 to 18-months steers, £2 4s to £3 7s; dairy cows, £3 4s 6d to £4 7s 6d ; weaners, £1 14s 6d. On Wednesday, the 20th instant, we held our usual fortnightly sale at Manaia, when the yards proved scarcely big enough for all the stock that came forward. The attendance was large, and bidding brisk for all classes of sheep and cattle, with the exception of forward steers ; and, excluding these (though a few changed hands), nearly every line was sold at the hammer or immediately after the sale. We quote : Fat and forward bullocks, £4 10s to £5; two-and-a-half to three - year - old steers, £4 2s to £4 103 6d; 18-months' streers, £2 18s 6d to £3 3s 6a; yearling steers, £1 18s to £2 14s; fat cows, £3 16a to £4; 18-months to twoyear old heifers, £2 14s 6d to £3 9s; yearling heifers, £1 15s to £2. Sheep : Shorn ewes, four-tooth, 9s 7d; lambs, 5s lOd to 7s 9d.Note : We cannot understand so small a demand for forward steers just now, considering the recent advance in the price of frozen meat and the probability of a firmer market for the next six months, though we hope to see a large demand for fat stock before long. HAWERA j Messes. Nolan, Tonks, and Co.'s Stock Report.—At Eltham on Tuesday there was a good muster of cattle; bidding tor young stock being keen and prices favourable to vendors. At Hawera on Thursday we yarded 300 head of cattle, and about 7000 sheep. Competition was slack at auction, but nearly every line was disposed of after the sale. We quote at Eltham: Yearling steers, £2 12s to £2 14s ; do. heifet'3, £2 to £2 ss; two-year-old heifers, £3: three-year-old bullocks, £3 13s 6d to £3 17s; two-year-old steers, t'3 5s ; cows in calf, £3 12s to £3 15s ; springers, £4 to £4 10s ; cows and calves, £4 ss. At Hawera two to two and a-half year steers, £3 10s to £4; two to two and a-half year, heifers, £2 16s to £3 3s; cows in calf, £3 9s to £3 12s (id; fat heifers, £3 12s Cd ; springers, £4 7s 6d to £5; yearlings, mixed sexes, £2 10s. Sheep: Full-mouthed ewes, lOs 6d to 10s 9d ; two-tooth ewes and wethers mixed, 10s 3d; four, six, and eight-tooth sheep, 10s 8d ; woolly lambs, 7s 9d to 8s 3d ; wether lambs, 8s 4d; culls, 3s 6d to 4s 6d ; ram iambs, bred by J, Mattlieson, Esq., 25s each for the line. LONDON. Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.— London, January 24. Tallow: Medium mutton, 265; beef, 24s 6d. Colonial barley, average 34s 6d; oats, 275; beans, 38s. Per Hew Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. London, January 22. Tallow is dull of sale. Fine mutton is worth 27s 3d per cwt; good beef tallow is worth 25s 6d per cwt.
