THE DEFENCES OF CANADA. Ottawa, October 21. The Marquis of Salisbury lias called upon the Canadian Government to furnish a report on the state of the defences of the Dominion. It is reported that a French warship lowered the Union Jack at Matacong, off the coast of Sierra Lfone, and illtreated the only two Englishmen on the island.
HEAVY FAILURES IN MOSCOW. St. Petersburg, October 21. Several firms in Moscow have suspended payment. The liabilities of one of them amount to £480,000.
THE EIGHT-HOURS' SYSTEM. London, October 21. Sir Charles Dilke, in a letter to the Daily Telegraph, states there is little hope of carrying the Eight Hours Bill, even in an optional form, and therefore, it would be better for the unionists to carry a resolution in favour of such an enactment in dangerous and unhealthy trades.
