NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council Wt j held last night. Present : Mr. Geo. Kent (Mayor), Messrs. Why man, Edgerley, Lumpkin,Stone, Laxon, Heron, and Angus. t Tiik Railways Commissioners and tub Council.. —In reference to the request of the Council to have _ the Park Road bridge widened, the Railway Commissioners declined to undertake the work unless the local body paid the cost. They also declined ,to provide gates at the Victoria ;. Crescent and Newmarket-street, crossings, or to place attendants there. This was a letter sent to Mr. F. Lawry, M.H.R., a repetition of the answer sent to the Council, The Mayor said that he feared nothing would be done with the bridge until an accident occurred. The letter was received. Permit. —Messrs. Hancock and Co. applied for permission to erect throe horse-posts in front of the Carlton Club Hotel. On the motion of the Mayor, the request was granted, subject to the approval of tho Streets Committee as to the position of the posts. Drainage.—The specifications for laying a drain at the back of property, Victoria Quadraut and Newmarket, were submitted, also the tenders received. This work had been referred to the Streets Committee, with power to act. The work was performed at a cost of £7 18s for labour, and Is 4d a load for ash, which was the lowest; tender, that of Mr. Bennett, and the action of the Streets Committee was approved. Finance.—The Colonial Bank furnished the following statement as to the Council's balances on the 30tU September:—General account (dr.), £84 10s 6d ; water loan sinking fund (cr.), £100; water fund interest account (cr.), £75 5s lid; waterworks account (cr.), £137 0s id.
