Warden's Court.—A short sitting of this Court was hold to-day, when the following applications were dealt with H. M. Moanataiari.—The Golden Afro reef in the stopes about the 100 feet level ii» turning out a large supply of crushing dirt, but no quartz has been broken in the western drive since work was resumed with the rock drill, although there are now over 30 feet stripped. A good class of quartz is also coming to hand from the same body at the Point Russell level, where gold is seen pretty freely. The other workings are without change. ' SYLVIA. Dr. Schicdel reports to the directors as follows:—Returns of operations of 2-1 days between September 4 and October 1, 1891 : About 450 tons of quartz and 4501b of selected ore were put through our experimental 10 head crashing and concentrating plant, yielding : Tons. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Saxon.No. 6 level : The new reef.,drive at this level has been extended a farther distance of 14 feet, making a total distance of 71 feet driven to the east of No. 2 break. For the past 15 to 16 feet this reef has been somewhat small, owing to the light nature of the country. However, the country is again improving, and likewise the reef is opening out, and to-day, as advised by wire, 301b of picked stone, 2ulb of this coming from the drive, and 10lb from the stopes . have been obtained. As the leading stope is now from 25 to 30 feet back, the drive will most probably be stopped for a few days, to allow the men to bring forward this stope for ventilation purposes. There are also No. 2 and 3 stopea in progress on this reef. The reef in all of these stopes will average from a foot to 18 inches in thickness, while a little gold is saved at each breaking down. No. 1 reef, drive at No. 6 level: This drive lias been extended a farther distance of 12 feet, making a total distance of 80 feet driven east of No. 2 break. The reef averages two feet in thickness in the drive at present, and gold is very frequently met with, and occasionally 5 and 101b of picked stone are being saved, and as advised on the 2nd instant, 451b of fair stone from this and the stopes. The leading stope" is carried almost with the drive, or at least high enough to permit timber to be placed in position, and apart from this three other stopes are now in progress. No. 1 stope is 20 feet back from face of drive, or 60 feet east of break. The reef in this stope averages fully three feet in thickness of heavily mineralised quartz. No. 2 stope is 40 feet from face of drive and 40 feet east of break. In this the reef averages three feet six inches iu thickness. No. 3 stope has recently been started from winze, and is 15 feet east of break. Hero the reef will average 18 inches in thickness. In all of these stopes a little gold is freely met with, and occasionally a few pounds of picked stone are being saved. No. 2 reef drive at No. 6 level : This drivo has been driven a farther distance of 16 feet since my last, or a total distance of 85 feet east of break. The reef in this has been somewhat disturbed for the past 10 feet owing to a soft ilathcad crossing from the footwall side coming in contact with the lode, and, as above, disturbed and altered the underlie of the reef. This, I am pleased to say, has almost disappeared in the drive, and the reef is becoming. - more compact, and with its usual underlie. As the leading stope is some 30 feet back from the face, the drive will be discontinued for a few days to permit the stope to lie brought forward to get the timber in position, and also for ventilation purposes. Same, No. 6 level : The drive being driven on the course of No. 2 break from No. 2- reef to. connect with No. 1 reef drive has been ; extended for the week a farther distance of 20 feet, making a total, distance of <18 feet, leaving still a farther distance of 15 feet to make the connection. In the drive a body of quartz varying from afoot to*lß inches has now been carried for the past ten feet, and occasionally a little gold is met with, this is identical with the blow of quartz worked at No. 5, but so far not so large. The drive on tlie No. 3 reef at No. 6 level : Work on this has been discontinued for a time, at least till some of the other drives and crosscuts are finished. As you will see by this report t|iat five main level drives and crosscuts are in progress, which requires some 30 men to keep them fully manned, and as this class of work may be termed prospecting or dead work, oponing blocks for sloping purposes, at the same time, although the drives are mostly ou quartz, still the supply from this class of work in comparison with the stopes is small and expensive, therefore this drive will be discontinued for a time. No. 5 level: The works in progress at this level are the stopes on the new reef, from which a fair supply of payable quartz is coming to hand. No. 3 level: The works in progress at this level are the crosscut being driven to cut the new reef; this drive is now in the required distance, and I expect the reef at .any. shift. There are now several small quartz veins making their appearance, which likewise indicates the reef to be close at hand. Battery: The battery has been fully employed for the week. Amalgam on hand, 350 ounces; picked stone on hand, 90 pounds. Victoria. —The contractors for driving east and west on the No. 4 reef at No. 6 level, aro making slow progress, especially in the east drive, the around being a tight sandstone country. The reef here averages 15 inches in thickness, and occasionally some promising minerals make their appearance. Western drive: The country in this drive is much kindlier, and ia also a good class of country for gold, at the same time the reef is much smaller than on the/eastern side. Driving for the west 10 feet, and east 15 feet, making a total of 25 feet for both faces.
