THE "STILL" CASES.
I A POLICE RAID AT POROTI, 1 ' WHANGAREI. Information has been received by Inspector Broham from the Whangarei-police that a negro named Georgo Hill was arrested at half-past five o'clock yesterday morning at Poroti, 18 miles from Whangarei, by Constables Sheehan and Moore, on a charge of having an illicit still on his premises. On search being made the police found 46 bottles of whisky, a quantity of wort (about 23 gallons), and what seamed to be a'plant for distilling whisky. Poroti lies between Maungatapere and the Northern Wairoa Rivetf and there is a native settlement of that name in the district, where the natives three years ago had a land dispute, resorted to arms, and some men were killed and wounded. At the Hokianga R.M. Court, on Wednesday, before Mr. Bishop, R. M., William Yereker Bindon was charged with having an illicit still in his possession. Mr. Hudson Williamson, Crown Prosecutor,appeared on behalf of the Collector of Customs. His Worship ultimately inflicted » fine of £75, including costs. ' Defendant was allowed six weeks in which to pay the amount, and accordingly entorod into bonds for that purpose. The default was three months' imprisonment. The articles seized were forfeited. A case against J. C. Bindon, for being concerned in tho removal of a still, ! was dismissed.
