GARROTTING IN MELBOURNE.
Information was conveyed to the Melbourne police the other night of a cowardly assault and robbery, of which a labouring man, named William Jones, hailing from Kilmore, was the victim. In Elizabethstreet ;■ North, shortly before midnight, Jones was suddenly seized by three ruffians who had been lurking in the shadow of a largo building. The attack was made with such suddenness and brutality, that the unfortunate countryman was felled before lie had time to resist. While lying on the ground, half dazed by a succession of heavy blows which had been showered upon him, his pockets were rifled of three sovereigns and a watch and chain. Descriptions of three suspected men, who were seen about the scene of the outrage some little timo previous, have been furnished to the police, and search is now being made for the alleged miscreants.
