CORRUPTION IN CANADA
COMMISSION OF INQUIRY. HIGH OFFICIALS FOUND GUILTY OF BRIBERY. Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Ottawa, September 11. A commission of Judges has been appointed to inquire into alleged scandals in public departments in the province of Quebec. Ottawa, September 12. A Bill lias been introduced into Parliament by the Premier providing for the suppression of corruption, and it has passed the Senate. Its provisions are of a very drastic character. The Hon. H. Mercier, Premier _of Quebec, and the Hon. G Langelier, Provincial Secretary, along with several other prominent officials, have been found guilty of bribery in connection with the contracts for the Baie Clialeur railway. This decision has caused considerable sensation. Mr. Cochrane was exonerated from any participation in the scandal.
