[FROM our* OWN' cokuksfo.vdests.]

Hamilton*, Thursday. A CURIOUS case cropped up at the Borou-h Council meeting on Tuesday night. Mr."" Jones has the contract for supplvin? gravel to the Borough at so much per fond for making and repairing the streets. The Borough foreman lately undertook the for. mation of a by street, and employing the borough team formed the street with earth and a light sand. The gravel contractor thereon sent in a bill to the Council for £9 which lie estimated to.be the value of the sand used by the Borough foreman had it been gravel, and put on by himself, as lie claimed that it ought to have been. A discussion arose as to the legality of the claim, ami Mr. Jones, the father of the gravel contractor, left the chamber. The only member to support the claim was Mr. Parr, and on the vote of the other members of the Council the letter was simply ordered to be received. The secretary of the South Auckland Racing Club lias been blamed that on the racing card issued for the late Easter meeting the name of Mr. Wliyte amongst those of the officials of the club as vice-president was printed J. B. Whyte, Esq., -iiweariof the Hon. J. B. Whyte. It is said that the Governor, who was present, noticed the mistake to Mr. Whyte himself. It appears that the party who purchased the cards furnished to the printing otiice as copy the programme of the previous nice meeting, which tool; place previous to the elevation of Mr. Whvte to the Upper House. Your correspondent has been asked to make tiiis explanation, Mr. T. H. White, the well-known architect of Taupiri, and formerly of Auckland, lias called for tenders for the erection of two new wards for the Waikato Hospital, at Hamilton. These wards will provide six beds each, and, it is to be .hoped, suffice ferthe needs of the district for some time to come, giving, altogether, 34 beds. The tenders are receivable until noon of Friday, the 2nd of October, at the office of the Waikato Hospital Board, in the Borough Council Chambers, Hamilton, where plans and specifications of the proposed building may be seen.

The recommendation contained in this column 011 Monday, that r.lm J'last: Hamilton baths, instead of being sold as they stand, should be taken down under the supervision of the foreman of works, and the timber stored for use in the erection of the sheeppens on ' the saleyard reserve, lias been adopted by the Borough Council, oil the representation of the Mayor. The motion for the increase of the salary of the town clerk from £110 to £ 1 •>"> per annum was carried by a majority of five to two, the Mayor, and Messrs. 'l'ippen, Hey, Slade, and Tieicl voting for, and Messrs. i'arr and Jones against it. A meeting of the members of the newlyformed bowiing club was held lust night, when the following oflieers were appointed: — President, Mr. Taylor; vice-president, Dr. March; committee of management, Messrs. Slade, J. B. Murray, John M?'.'cumbe, and 11. 1". Sandes; lion, treasurer. Mr. LeQucsne; and lion, secretary, Mr. lv L. Hone. There was a keen contest- to-day at t.ie election of three members of the I'orotijM Council in place of the three retiring nsciabers, Messrs. Dey, .Jones, and Tippin. 1 here were four candidates, Messrs. Jones. 0. Tippin, 11. M. Salmon, and R. I'". San< es. At the eloe of the poll the iiviml>«;r stood as follows:—Jones, 76; Tippin, US ; SHUi.e?, ll(i; and Salmon, 16. Messrs. Salmon, Sandes, and Tippin were declared <li»0 elected. , , It has been blowing a gale from the east all day, but without rain. . , " Oiuri'O, Thursday. ■ It is matter of satisfaction to Mi'- bowman's friends here to learn that his tv children, thrown from the top of a Wil ( « load of furniture when starting or If ' bridge, received no injury, merely » s i mtMn <r l and are quite well.
