Commencing with the steamship Alameda, which arrived here yesterday, all the steamers of the Oceanic S.S. Co.. plying between San Francisco, Auckland, and Sydney, are now to call at Apia, Samoa, both on the outward and homeward trip, instead of transferring mails and passengers to a small sailing vessel off Tutuila, about seventy miles from that port, as formerly. The alteration in the route will cause about fifty miles of extra steaming. The traffic between Swi Francisco and Samoa has increased wonderfully cf late. But it is understood that Messrs. J. D. Spreckel3 and Brothers are only trying the present scheme as an experiment, and its continuance depends upon the inducements in the way of passengers and freight, and upon the length of time taken in despatching the steamers on arrival. The barque Flora, 571 tons, left New York on August 1 for Wellington and Auckland. Her chief line of freight is kerosene, 7350 cases for Wellington, and 2500 cases for here. On July "i the barque Lottie Moore left New York for'Dunedin and Wellington. She has 9300 cases of kerosene, besides sundries. At New York the barquentine Elinor Vernon is chartered for Dunedin and here, anil is expected to get away on September .10. The August Burchard i 3 loading for Dunedin and Lyttelton, and is timed to sail on August .'SO. Advices from Rarotonga state that Messrs. Donald and Eden borough's schooner Torea will probably leave for this port about the 17th inst. From " Sea and Shore," a handy maritime, little journal, just established in San Francisco, we learn that an important order lias been made recently by the Peruvian Government. On and after August 1, 1891, the work of loading and discharging vessels in the ports of that country will not be delayed by religious holidays. To owners of vessels and captains who trade in Peruvian waters, this news will be most welcome. Two of the new cruisers which recently arrived in Australia from home—the Katoornba and Ringarooma — are to leave Hobart on October 18 for a trip to New Zealand waters, and will remain some time, while the Orlando, Wallaroo, Mildura, and Karrakatta return to Sydney. The three last-named will bo paid off and go into reserve, while the officers and men will recoinmission the G'uragoa, Rapid, and Lizard. Captain Franklin, o£ the ship Royal Tar, which recently arrived at San Francisco with her ship's company in such a horrible state with scurvy, gangrene, and other hardships, and who died on the passage, was formerly chief officer of the steamer Jubilee, of the Ellis line. Yesterday morning the Union S.S. Co.'s little steamer Maori, which has been super; seded in the inter-island service in the Fiji Group by the s.s. Southern Cross, came into harbour. She is in command of Captain Black, late of the Southern Cross, Captain Beaumont, of the Maori, still remaining in the island trade. The Maori had a good trip up from Suva, having sailed thence at 11 a.m. on the 4th instant. _ She had light S.E. breezes up to the_Bth instant, after which strong easterly _ winds with thick weather prevailed to arrival. The steamer anchored off Rangitoto at 2 a.m. yesterday, and came up to the wharf about eight o'clock. At the Customs yesterday the schooner Marniion was •cleared out by the Kauri Timber Company to load timber for Dunedin it Tairua. .. .. , The barque Grasmere is to ship about 330,000 ft sawn kauri at Whangoroa for Sydjjuring yesterday the s.s. Bichmond was putting out her fruit, coffee, copra, and other , carjjo at the Railway Whan.

She will transfer her Auckland cargo at Wellington. About noon yesterday the s.s. Talune left for the South and Melbourne with a general cargo and a good number of passengers. The French frigate Dubourdicu left San Francisco on August 15 bound for Valparaiso via Panama.

The Cunard Company has made a contract with a Clyde lirm to build three twinscrew steamers with a speed of twenty-two knots an hour, to cover the run to New York in five and a-half days. Advices from Samoa mention that quite a number of foreign craft have arrived at Apia lately. On the 19th August the American brigantine T. W. Lucas, which had been eiven up for lost, put in an appearance, after being 27 days out from Fiji. She was followed on the 24th by the barquentino Asia, from Guayaquil, in ballast, to load copra. On the 23th tho barquentine Florida arrived from Mioko, New Britain, having on board 207 labourers for the German firm. On the 26th the barque Cosina arrived after a smart run of 10 days from Brisbane with general carp, and to load copra for the German firm. The barque Adelina arrived on the 27th from Mioko, also with" labour for the German plantation. On the 28th the barque Nebo, from Newcastle, arrived in ballast to load copra for McArthur and Co.

THE R.M.S. ALAMEDA. Yesterday morning shortly after 11 o'clock the mail steamer Alameda, of the Oceanic S.S. Company's line, arrived hero rather unexpectedly from San Francisco via Honolulu and Apia, and her popular commander, Captain H. G. Morse, is to be congratulated upon having made another smart passage, the trip from the Golden Gate including detentions ■having occupied only IS days 23 hours. Mr. J. B. Sutton, the purser, to whom we are indebted for files of exchanges, etc., supplies with the following memoranda of tho trip The Alameda left San Francisco on August 21st, and discharged the pilot at 3.45 p.m. Good progress was made with favourable weather across to the Hawaiian Group, and the steamer picked up the pilot at 0.30 a.m. A stay of 12 hours sufficed to land her passengers and cargo, and the vessel steered south for Samoa. She arrived off Apia harbour ou September 4th at 9.33 a.m., and got away asraiii after an hour's delay. Fine weather was had till off the New Zealand coast, where strong north-east winds were experienced. The Alameda picked up Pilot Sainty off Tiri shortly after 10 a.m. yesterday, and lie brought her into port as above. During the day the steamer put out her New Zealand cargo and took in coal, resuming her voyage to Sydney at 2 a.m. to-day, with about a dozen additional passengers lrom here.
